CSA 2010: Updates and Advice
After years of testing and preparations, CSA 2010 begins rolling out nationwide in just a few weeks and many transportation professionals are preparing for the regulations.
In fact, a recent poll by the American Transportation Research Institute found more than 25 percent of respondents ranked CSA 2010 their top concern for the trucking industry -- even above the economy. Considering no one can predict exactly how these new regulations will affect the transportation business, or how many companies and individuals will be negatively impacted by the increased focus on safety records, the concern is understandable.
We may not be sure exactly how CSA 2010 will play out in the long run, but we do know these facts:
- In December 2010, SafeStat will be replaced by the CSA 2010 Behavior Analysis Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs).
- Full rollout will take up to a year, as enforcement staff are trained to follow the new requirements and system.
- As of September 22, only 2.6 percent of carriers logged in to the FMCSA's data preview center to review their information.
- In 2009, more than 45 percent of industry citations were due to Hours of Service violations. Under the new CSA 2010 BASICS, HOS violations carry a weight of 7 on a scale weighted from 1 to 10.
- At least 4000 fleets with 10 drivers or more have inadequate safety ratings.
- Starting in December, FMCSA will issue warning letters to carriers with unsatisfactory ratings.
- Contrary to some rumors, the new regulations will not penalize drivers for physical attributes, such as body mass index (BMI), neck size or weight.
WHAT TO DO NOW
Check Data
If you are a carrier and have not yet previewed your company's safety data, now is the time to do so. Check your data on the FMCSA website, and make sure you have your U.S. DOT number and PIN available.
Educate Yourself and Your Drivers
If you are unfamiliar or confused by any aspects of CSA 2010, educate yourself now. We have been covering these regulations in detail on our blog since April, including:
As the clock ticks and the date draws nearer, we at Getloaded want to make sure all our members are ready for the new regulations many industry executives are calling a "game changer." You've been asking for new features that would make Getloaded even easier to use -- and we've been diligently working for months to offer you these solutions -- and more.
After much preparation, we're excited to announce we are on the cusp of some awesome enhancements and updates to our site. Want to know what's coming? Here is a very small taste of what you can look for soon:
Multiple date selection when searching for loads
As you search for loads, you can now specify multiple dates you need to search for. Want to look at posts for today, next Tuesday and Thursday? What about from next week to next month? You'll soon be able to find the loads you need, whenever you need them.
Additional backhaul links
Want to see multiple backhaul links from a load search? Instead of performing multiple searches to find backhaul options, your search information will be automatically incorporated into your initial, outgoing search, saving you time and helping you stay loaded.
Upgraded alerting
When you are logged in to Getloaded, our new, improved alerting feature will instantly notify you as soon as new loads are available that meet your search criteria and continue to search until the load(s) you need are found.
Improved auto-refresh
No more hitting the refresh button. Soon, when you search for loads, the system will automatically refresh the information to display new loads and continue to do so, helping ensure you don't miss any freight that might fit your needs.
In the next few weeks, keep a close eye on Getloaded for your chance to take a sneak peak at these new features. We are committed to making your searches and professional life easier than ever before -- and look forward to sharing these and other exciting upgrades with you soon.

How Much Does that Load Pay?
By: Timothy D. Brady
This is the worst question you can ask when talking to a freight broker or shipper -because it puts total control of what they'll pay on the load into their hands.
Picture this: You have a wheelbarrow filled with dirt at the top of a hill, or you have the same wheelbarrow at the bottom of a hill. Obviously getting that dirt-filled wheelbarrow to the bottom of a hill would be a lot less work than trying to push it to the top.
Now think of this wheelbarrow as your freight rate: do you want it at the top of the hill, or in the ravine at the bottom? If you ask, "How much does the load pay?" you've just put your rate wheelbarrow at the bottom of the ravine, hoping you can push it back up the hill where you want it. If you don't ask the question, it's on top of the hill from the beginning. All you need to do is control your descent.
To keep your rates from dropping too far down the hill, you need to know:
