Letter from the President - Bryan Jones

TruckSo you're 30-59 years old, you like football and have been in the industry 20+ years?

A couple of months ago we started running a bi-weekly poll on the login page.  To date we've run 16 different polls and as you can see we've tried to have some fun with it.

We were quite pleased to hear that 45.8% of responders spend more than four hours on Getloaded.com each day.  Freightliner got the nod with 33.4% of the votes for what type of tractor you drive.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that 60% of respondents exercise at least one time per week.  The other 40% got winded reading the poll or doing 12oz curls.  Football dominated for favorite sport with 40.1% of the votes and NASCAR came in second at 24.8%.  Speaking of football is this a crazy season or what; come on Cowboys!  Sorry, I digress.  It looks like a good majority of you have pets but 62.7% never take them on the road.  However, 50.1% sometimes take your spouse or significant other on the road with you.  Fido is probably more comfy at home anyway.  About 70% of you are between 30 and 59 years old, with 40% of you having been in the industry for over 20 years!  Last but not least, it was certainly rewarding to see that 70% of you were very likely to refer a friend to use Getloaded.com!

It's great getting to know you, our members, and each time you answer our online polls it helps us do just that.  We try to keep the question short and to the point, hopefully taking less than 30 seconds and you can view the results on the Getloaded lab site at http://labs.getloaded.com.  While you're checking out the poll results be sure to take a look at the rest of the lab site.  This is where we put up new features or products we are considering adding to Getloaded.com.  Take a look around, check out what's new and be sure to give us your feedback.

In this newsletter you don't want to miss Tim Brady's thoughts on "Sailing in Uncharted Economic Waters".  Also be sure you take a look at the new GLA Blog and of course don't forget to submit your Getloaded.com t-shirt slogan ideas!

Thank you as always for your trust and support in Getloaded.com and I look forward to continuing to serve you.

Best regards,

Sailing in Uncharted Econimic Waters

 By Timothy D. Brady

For the trucking industry, this has been a harsh year. With the mortgage and housing collapse, the price of fuel increasing at unprecedented rates, and now Wall Street coming apart at the seams, we're all afraid to travel around the next corner. It seems as one area starts to stabilize, another vital one begins to unravel.

In this unstable economic environment, we can no longer use the Christopher Columbus method of business management: Instead, we've got to know where we're going; when we'll get there, where we are when we arrive, and when we return, we need to know where we've been.

The idea that we can take the 'fair wind' approach to running a trucking business will no longer work. Just like you lay out a travel plan for a load by selecting the most efficient route possible (even though it may not be the shortest), knowing where the fuel stops and rest stops will occur and coordinating them to maximize the available hours of service, planning the schedule so to miss the rush hours of large urban areas, etc. We must now take that same care in how we set up our business, plan all our loads, and execute our business plan.

Driving drowsy; stressed out about traffic, work and personal issues; heartburn, indigestion and headaches. Does any of this sound familiar (and I don't mean from a Pepto-Bismol commercial)? Well, if you're in the transportation industry it probably does.  Whether you are a carrier, a broker, a freight forwarder, a manufacturer or really play a role in the transportation industry at all, you know how stressful it can be. TumsŪ is like candy!

But truthfully the entire country depends on this industry for just about all of its goods. So what's a person to do in order to combat the onslaught of the unfortunate side affects surrounding the added stress, lack of sleep, etc.?

The Great American Trucking Show 2008

GL BlueRewarding event and great interaction with members

Even with the transportation industry experiencing tough times, GATS 2008 was a success! While there was a slight decrease in attendance from 2007, event coordinators were very pleased with the levels of attendance. This year the show saw over 500 exhibitors, over 44,000 attendees and once again secured the Great American Trucking Show as the second-largest trucking industry trade show.

Employees of Getloaded.com had the opportunity to attend this annual event in Dallas, TX and report that it was great having the chance to meet members face to face.
