Notes from the Prez:
BUFF CLASSIC: Thinking about doing the Buffalo Classic? We hope to have a training
ride in September on a Sunday to help get you ready for it. Watch the
newsletter for updates.
OLD STAGE ROAD: A number of club members have pointed out to
be wary of Olde Stage Road, as the road has now also been coated with
the same small gravel pieces that were laid down on parts of Highway 36
recently. Use extreme caution out there.
RIDE UPDATES: The Thursday night road bike ride meets at Bacaro Restaurant
this week at 5:45 for the roadies. Note that departure times will be
moving up earlier in September as we are losing day light and need to
get an earlier start so we can get back before darkness falls. Watch the
calendar on the website for changes.
TIPS/INSIGHTS: Winston from the Chris Carmichael Coaching Team has provided some more cycling tips and insights in his Winston's Corner section of the newsletter.
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: The weather seems to be cooling
a bit and Sept often has some of the best riding weather of the year
here so after this wet summer let's get out there and take advantage of
this great weather!!!
Keep Riding!

Winston's Corner: Sports Massage
Editors note: We like to thank Winston from Carmichael Training Systems becoming
one of our newest sponsors and providing great information on a variety
of cycling related information
Sports massage is a very touchy subject because everyone's body
reacts differently. Loads of professional athletes utilize massage for a variety
of reasons. Most commonly athletes
utilize massage for recovery and relaxation.
If you've ever wondered about, or are seriously considering massage,
than we suggest that you experiment, but do so knowingly. If you're preparing for a big event don't try
anything new without ample time to recover from potential consequences. The best time to experiment is during the off
season, when nothing is on the line. Trying new things just before a race can
be the worst idea you've had all season, and can cost you the opportunity of a
lifetime. The touchy thing about massage
is that the technique, intensity, and duration all affect your body in
different ways. Any massage that is
considered "deep tissue" will usually involve techniques that aim at
restructuring muscle or other tissues.
The intense pressure can actually cause damage within your muscles, but
for good reason. This damage is causing necessary changes within your body that
affect everything from circulation, to force production. The soreness after a
deep tissue massage indicates that your body is rebuilding itself. This type of massage is good when you have
knots of scar tissue within your muscles, are recovering from an injury, or
have lots of "tightness" within your muscles. Deep pressure massage is not the type of massage you want to get before
any event, or hard training period. It
often requires a period of recovery itself to let your body properly restructure
itself. Light massage is remarkably
different. It involves long strokes of
light pressure to assist circulation and possibly create heat. This type of massage is best applied after a
workout to aid in flushing out metabolic by-products from within your muscles,
and to increase nutrient transport.
This
is often the most common type of massage that endurance athletes utilize. When done properly it can enhance recovery by
not causing any "structural" damage, but by increasing circulation. Often times a recovery rub containing
anti-inflammatory, or pain relieving compounds is applied for increased
benefits. Massage is an ancient practice
with a variety of purposes, so make an appointment with a professional and
experience the power of touch. Ride On, Winston Sauber BS, USAC, CSCS Carmichael Training Systems
