Winston's Corner: Hydration
Editors note: We like to thank Winston from Carmichael Training Systems becoming
one of our newest sponsors and providing great information on a variety
of cycling related information
The
human body is composed mostly of water which every cell uses to transport
nutrients, maintain performance, eliminate waste, and recover. Unfortunately water
is constantly being lost through your skin as perspiration, and through your airways
as you breathe. Hydration is therefore a
critical element in performance and recovery.
The best method of tracking hydration is by weighing yourself. To get a
baseline drink enough water to make your urine a light lemonade color, and then
weigh yourself. After you exercise weigh
yourself again. For every pound lost
replace it with 16oz (1lb) of fluid. This is the equivalent of one small bottle
filled to the bottom of the neck. When
training in a hot environment your body loses water and salts faster as you
sweat more making hydration increasingly important.
Good
advice for proper hydration is to fill up before your workout with 16 oz one
hour before, then drink one bottle during every hour. Again, in the heat you need to drink more as
you sweat more. After the workout use
the weight method, or drink until you have to urinate, but don't overdo it.
Hypo-hydration, the opposite of dehydration, is just as dangerous. It occurs when you drink too much water and
deplete or dilute essential electrolytes or salts.
Everyone loses salt through
sweat, but some people lose salts much faster, and therefore need more in their
diet. Always use a sports drink that contains sodium and potassium like GU Electrolyte
Brew especially if you are a salty sweater and find white lines on your
clothing, face, or helmet straps, or cramp in the heat. Don't wait until it's too late, dehydration
can happen faster than you think. Weigh
the consequences, then weigh yourself and learn your body's natural hydration
needs.

About Us
The Boulder Cycling Club is a non-profit organization managed by
volunteers. Our mission is to create a more livable community by promoting
health & recreation through bicycle activities, advocacy, &
education. The BCC provides a safe and social alternative to
the competitive riding style of most clubs. We are more about fun
than competition. Our rides are no-drop tours that leave you time to
look at the scenery and chat a bit.
