Tonight's Ride is Cancelled
Our
ride cancellation policy is that one hour before ride time the RealFeel
temperature forecasted by Accuweather.com must be above 45 degrees and the
roads must be dry or the ride is cancelled.
Although Accuweather.com is forecasting RealFeel temperature in the
mid-40's during ride time this evening, we have decided to cancel tonight's
(Thursday's) ride. We are concerned
about the poor surface conditions of shoulders and paths on our routes. Sand, snow, and wet surfaces from melted snow
make them unsafe, unpredictable, and narrower.
See "Dealing with Bad Road
Surfaces" below.
It
doesn't look good for Saturday either, so please check Accuweather.com and you're
your email before heading to Amante at 11 a.m.
However, don't despair - spring is in the air!
Please
note that in addition to often being below the actual temperature due to
windchill, the RealFeel temperature can often be above the actual
temperature. For example, today the
temperature was 36 degrees at one point while the RealFeel was 50 degrees! This will happen often during the sunny part
of the day in Colorado
because RealFeel includes the effect of sunshine intensity. See "Whey the BCC Uses RealFeel" below. So when you're checking to see if a ride is
cancelled, remember to check Accuweather and not to rely on a temperature
gauge. In addition, always check for a
Club email notice since a ride can be cancelled or rescheduled for other
reasons too.

Reminder about New Club Insurance
& Membership Renewal
As
another benefit for our members, we recently purchased accident insurance that
is sponsored by the League of American Cyclists and used by several hundred of
their member clubs. BCC members are now
covered for up to $10,000 in medical expenses in excess of coverage by other
policies for accidents that occur while riding on a Club ride. With most health insurance polices having
increasingly high deductibles, this policy could really help even if you have
other health insurance.
The policy also covers first time guests. Unfortunately, due to the policy restrictions
if you let your membership expire, you will not be able to ride with the Club
as a guest until you renew. So renew now, while
you are thinking about. Twelve
months is automatically added to whatever time you have left on your current
membership. Click here to see all
the great benefits we have put together for members.

Cycling Skills & Road Safety
Class
Many
of our Ride Leaders are planning to take a great course offered by the League
of American Bicyclists that is suitable for all experience levels. Many very experienced cyclists have taken the
course and been surprised at all the cycling and road safety skills they didn't
know about. The class will be on a
weekend with 4 hours each on Saturday and Sunday morning with each session
starting with f two hours of class time followed by two hours of guided road
biking. If you are interested in taking
the class with a group of BCC members this spring, please contactinfo@bouldercyclingclub.com and
tell us what weekends you would prefer.
Space is limited.

Dealing with Bad Road Surfaces
On
the rides we've done so far this year, we have noticed many new potholes and
parallel cracks, so be on the lookout for those on your rides. Parallel cracks (those extending in the same
direction as you are riding) are especially dangerous because they may appear
to be repaired from previous attempts to seal them, but have re-opened during
this record-setting winter. Also, beware
of hard-to-see sheets of ice from melting snow in bike path underpasses and
other places shielded from direct sun.

Support City for Cycling Award
Boulder has been
nominated for a "Best City for Cyclists" distinction as part of
Treehugger's Best of Green 2010 Readers Choice Awards, and the city is asking
residents and fans of the city's bike paths to vote for Boulder at www.treehugger.com. Boulder
already has been recognized as a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community by the
League of American Bicyclists and recently won a vote by fans to bring the
Google Street Trike to town to map the Boulder Creek Path.

Awards
like this will bring more cyclists to the county as visitors and
residents. Is that good for the city and
road bikers? Maybe. Some argue that having more cyclists on the
road makes motorists more cautious and puts pressure on local governments to
improve cycling infrastructure. Others
argue that if the motorist and cyclist traffic volume already exceeds the
capacity of our local infrastructure, more cyclists will just decrease
safety. This may be especially true at a
time where government budgets are strained and there is little money available
for infrastructure improvements. The BCC
is not endorsing either position. We
don't have the policy expertise to decide such a complicated issue.
However,
we know that what the BCC offers existing cyclists in Boulder County
will help no matter what. We offer an
opportunity to ride with a group that has safe riding policies, trained Ride
Leaders, and routes designed with safety in mind. We also promote better cycling safety
education for our members and the rest of the cycling community.

Why
the BCC Uses RealFeel
The AccuWeather RealFeel temperature is an index that describes what the
temperature really feels like. It is a unique composite of the effects of
temperature, wind, humidity, sunshine intensity, cloudiness, precipitation and
elevation on the human body--everything that affects how warm or cold a person
feels.
Temperature by itself gives only part of the picture. Other measures, like
the Wind Chill or Heat Index, include temperature and only one additional
element like wind speed or humidity and many are designed to measure effects on
an inanimate object or an unclothed person. None of them tell what it really
feels like to an appropriately dressed person. Only The RealFeel Temperature
includes everything that affects how warm or cold a person feels.
For example, on a steamy July day without a breath of wind, with the noon
sun beating down, the official temperature (which is measured in the shade) may
be 92 degrees. But when you stand outside in the scorching sun, it may feel
like 118 degrees. In contrast, when the official temperature is 92 degrees with
a nice breeze blowing and low humidity, with bright sunshine but late in the
day so the sun intensity is not as strong, it may feel like 86 degrees.
