Dear Boulder Cycling Club Members:

The annual Pre Season Kickoff Party is less then 2 weeks away so mark it on your calendar (February 17, from 5 to 8 at Bicycle Village in Boulder)
Come on out and win free prizes including the grand prize a Trek Cruiser Bike (need not be present to win) courtesy of our friends at Bicycle Village, not to mention a whole bunch of other free goodies that will be given out throughout the evening. We will provide free food and drink so stop in and see what we have planned for 2010.

George will again be there with the 2 Power Taps so you can compete and win yet more prizes! Come out and meet fellow like minded recreational cyclists or catch up with friends you've made over the past. See below on some of the exciting things happening with the Boulder Cycling Club!

Bacaro Restaurant has changed it's regularly scheduled ride this month to this Saturday February 6th meeting at 9:00 am at the restaurant for Cappuccino.  Click here for more information.

BCC Weekend SAG Wagon Rides

small logoFor the 2010 season, the Club is rolling out a new member benefit and activity.  We will be organizing three longer rides (60-90 miles) on weekend days and providing SAG Wagon support including food and beverage transportation and limited mechanical and first aid supplies.  We think this type of ride will be better than a typical organized mass-participation ride because:

1) It will be safer due to fewer people and trained BCC Ride Leaders
2) You will receive personal and prompt service from the SAG Wagon
3) You have the option of bringing the fresh food of your choice

Club volunteers will operate the SAG vehicle.  Dave Benson will be conducting a survey to determine preferred dates, routes, length, food, and interested volunteers.  We are anticipating one ride in July, August, and September.  We may offer an alternative shorter route for each ride.  Dave will have a table at the Season Kick-Off Party where you can take the survey and express your interest in participating and/or volunteering.

World's Top 10 Cycling Routes

small logoAre you thinking of a cycling vacation?  In the U.S., San Juan Island was the only route to make it into Lonely Planet's "World's Top 10 Cycling Routes."  The results are featured in the book Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2010.  That puts the island in the company of the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand; Cape Breton Island, Canada; Friuli-Venezia, Italy; Isle of Wight, England; West Coast Tasmania, Australia; Luberon and Mont Ventoux, France; County Clare, Ireland; La Farola, Cuba; and National Highway 1, Vietnam.    Tasmania, anyone?

2010 Club Improvements

February 17 will be the Season Kick-Off Party for our fourth season!  For three years, we have pursued our vision of providing a safe and social alternative to the competitive riding style of most clubs.  We are more about fun than competition.

We will continue to offer:
  • Scheduled weekly rides with socializing before and after
  • Great discounts at local bike shops and other merchants, including a 10% discount bikes at Bicycle Village (one per year)
  • Monthly newsletters with Club updates and informative cycling articles 3)
  • Quarterly social and educational events
  • Informative website
  • Special rides and outings
This year we have added:
  • Free weekend SAG wagon rides
  • Ride Leader safety training
  • A members-only section of the website
  • Member insurance with up to $10,000 in coverage for medical costs and bike damage
  • New cycling safety and group ride polices
  • A and B routes to accommodate all levels of riders
On the administrative side, we have:
  • Formed a non-profit corporation
  • Applied to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status so donations would be tax deductible
  • Joined the League of American Bicyclists and the Alliance for Biking and Walking giving us access to their great resources for improving clubs
  • Acquired sophisticated membership database software
  • Added new sponsors

Our officers and directors are volunteers and receive no compensation for their services.  Please do your part to support the club by volunteering at the BCC table at the Kick-Off Party.

The Club's approach addresses two of the biggest issues that deter people from road biking:  1) safety concerns and 2) the exclusivity of elitist clubs:

Safety

small logoWe have a new Ride Leader training program with a 30 page Ride Leader Guide based on one of the best programs in the nation.  We have already trained 15 ride leaders.  If you have ridden with us before, please volunteer for the next training at the Kick-Off Party.  Ride Leaders do not need to be expert cyclists, and new ride leaders start out in support roles without responsibility for the entire ride.  Many BCC ride leaders will be taking with a road safety and cycling skills training by a Certified Instructor from the League of American Bicyclists.  Our BCC Ride Leaders will be taking the course in April.

We have also instituted some new safety policies.  We will be strictly observing all traffic laws, including coming to a full stop at stop signs.  After all, we are a social riding club, and stops are a chance to chat a little in route.  Because of increasing concern in the cycling community about injuries resulting from bike-on-bike accidents, we are requiring minimum following distances to prevent pile-ups.  Our Ride Leaders will continually provide more safety education in each pre-ride announcement.  Thanks to Cascade Bicycle Club of Seattle and Bicycle Colorado for guidance on these issues!

No Cycling Elitism Here

small logoOur rides are no-drop tours that leave you time to look at the scenery and chat a bit - not intimidating and boring training sessions.  Our members are welcoming and not elitist.  Our mission is to "Create a Better Community through Road Biking," not to train competitive athletes.

We  welcome and support women.  Susan Weaver's book A Woman's Guide to Cycling argues that the greatest deterrent for women interested in cycling is the male-dominance of the sport.  She asks the rhetorical question, "How should women react when male riders ignore them during club rides?"  That won't be a problem on a no-drop BCC ride with a trained Ride Support Team!

We want riders of all levels to feel welcome, so this year we are offering A and B routes on scheduled rides.  Both routes start and finish at roughly the same time.  The B route is shorter and the average speed is less than on the A ride.  We also welcome experienced riders who want to take a break from hammering and have some fun.

Annual Preseason Kickoff Party

Feb, 17,  from 5 -8 p.m. at Bicycle Village
small logo
Now that it's 2010 let's kickoff the year with a party! The Annual PreSeason Kickoff Party is February 17, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Bicycle Village Boulder location just west of Whole Foods. It's become a great way to get back in touch with fellow like minded recreational cyclists that you've ridden with in the past and a great way to meet people who have a common interest in recreational cycling.

Once again our friends at Bicycle Village are donating a Trek Cruiser Bike and other cycling oriented goodies that will be given away throughout the night as free prizes! In addition, we will have refreshments and drinks, a sponsors table, booths for nonprofit advocacy and charity rides. Put the date on your day timer now!

We are looking for members who would like to volunteer to help. Please contact Donald@bouldercyclingclub.com
