September Thoughts

The unthinkable is occurring to our riding days, they are getting slowly shorter! A time of mourning is around the corner don't you know it when darkness will overtake us before our favorite ride is over. I am already checking out my mini-headlight and flashing taillight to make sure the batteries have enough juice in them. I just hate the look of them cluttering up my bike though! I will pay the price to keep riding I'm sure. Make sure if you are planning on some night ridding you have enough light front and back to see and be seen by our two ton, four wheeled friends on the road.

Out riding this week I was taken with what my daughter-in-law calls the sound of cycling. She says she is addicted to the whirring sound of the rubber on the road at 22 miles per hour. I am also hooked on the sound of the rubber on the road and the whirring of chain on gears. I recently upgraded my rear derailleur to Dura Ace and the new noise is music to my ears and the smoother shifting is a bonus! Another sound of cycling I enjoy is the wind rushing by at the 30 miles per hour.

I have saved an article out of an outdoor magazine called Explore that pegs me as an incurable bike-aholic, see if some of these one liners fit you also:

  • You have an uncontrollable urge to bring your bike into the house - preferably into the living room or bedroom (mine lives in my bedroom since I don't currently have a garage!).

  • You view Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries as times to exchange gifts of bicycling components and accessories.

  • You hang around bike shops without really needing anything (but looking at the latest 15 pound bike).

  • Your legs are tan only to mid-thigh and your feet are white below the sock line.

  • You begin to regard your job or school as a troublesome nuisance, interfering with your quality biking time.

  • You divide your friends into two groups - those that bike and those that don't bike.

  • You talk about Lance Armstrong, Carlos Sastre, George Hincapie and Levi Leipheimer as if they were personal friends.

  • You talk as though you really understand gear ratios.

  • You regard the seriousness of a sickness or injury by the length of time it takes until you can resume biking (or how many miles you think you can ride without making yourself sicker).

  • You pull your car into the driveway and subconsciously twist your heel to clip out of the accelerator.

  • The first thing you ask when you regain consciousness is "how's my bike?"

  • You will look at the bike name on the downtube instead of the svelte rider on the bike riding by.

I'm sure you have some more to add to this list! Keep the rubber side down and the wind in your face, see you on the roads and trails!

Message from the President

Hello to September everybody. Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. I managed to attain one of my own personal cycling goals this weekend and made it up to WARD! I want to thank one of members Roger Hall for all your help in getting me to the top! When someone tells you about that last mile when it gets really hard I'm now personally knowledgeable about just how hard it truly is---VERY HARD!

Part of what the club is all about is helping people achieve their own personal goals whatever they may be. A couple years ago I wouldn't have dreamed I could make it up to Ward and look at me today, a happy and sore cyclist!!!!

We are in the midst of setting the September Ride Calendar and coordinating with ride leaders and developing routes so a quick note on this week is that all rides are the same as usual except for the Thursday night Margarita Ride because Steve our normal leader is heading down to Florida to root on his beloved Gators. I think I'll stick around and root on my Buckeyes as they face a challenging USC team this weekend. Anyway, how about those BUFFS!

Speaking of Buffs this weekend is the Buffalo Classic Bike Ride! Lots of members from the club will be riding and thanks to Sue, one of our members, we'll have a promotional table at the event. Thanks a bunch Sue! We are in need of one more volunteers to help set up he table, tent and promo materials at 10:00 am on Sunday the 7th at CU.

Carolyn Larson has volunteered to help but she'll need someone to help her set up. Also, If your riding and want to work the table after the ride let me know. Contact me at donald@bouldercyclingclub.com

The website face lift should be appearing very soon--- watch for the launch soon.

Special thanks to
Barry Schacht for donating a Bike Bell to any new member joining the club! Matt and Judi for donating a table we can use at our promotional events. Laura at Whole Foods for donating smoothies we've enjoyed before the rides this past month.

As you can see it's with donations and volunteers that the club just gets better and better.

Hope to see you out their on the BIKE!

Thursday Jamestown Road Bike
  Amantes - North Boulder
Meet at Amantes North at 5:30 PM. Join ride leaders on a hill climb to Jamestown.  We'll head up 36, turn on Lefthand Canyon road, and take the classic route to Jamestown.  It's probably the easiest mountain climb in the Boulder area and is suitable for all road bike riders especially intermediate road bike riders or folks new to road biking.  Pace will be 15mph to 18mph on the flats and quite a bit slower on the climb.  The BCC has a "no drop policy" meaning we will wait up for you so long as you are willing to complete the ride.
