Issue: #21 August/2008
Dear Fellow Riders:

A lot is on tap for this week with our regular rides and also an interesting movie Club Member Jim alerted us to at the Boulder Theater. The film follows the Paris to Roubaix race behind the scenes. Read more on that and information about Honor the Stop below. Honor the Stop is a "movement" to point out safety and the danger of riding your bike.  Two of the club's strongest mottos are safety first and obeying the rules of the road!

Don't forget the Tour de Cure is fast approaching! We have a team participating in the ride and if you're interested in joining go to www.tourdecurecolorado.com. Club Member Todd has worked incredibly hard on this project so let's get out there and support him!

Also upcoming is the Buff Classic Ride on September 7th.  I have officially formed the team and if your riding in it please sign up under the team name and let's ride together.

Watch this space for future information on the new Valmont BikePark. It's a very exciting project and the club has gotten behind it and will try to support the project anyway we can.

Enjoy this great weather and getout there and RIDE!!!

Honor the Stop!

Several newspaper articles recently have highlighted the fact
that anger and aggression toward cyclists has risen sharply
since gas prices went up and the number of riders increased.
Our club President, Donald Cicchillo, was recently quoted in
an article on this subject in the LA Times.  Last Sunday's New York Times contains another alarming article on cyclist/vehicle conflicts. The article discusses how vehicle drivers are especially outraged when  cyclists fail to abide by the traffic laws.

Honor the Stop is a new, not-for-profit community-driven campaign promoting safe, promoting safe, courteous and respectful use of roadways. Through a personal pledge to obey all roadway laws, the Honor the Stop initiative encourages respect for those killed or suffering serious injury in traffic accidents. No one group or individual is more or less important than any other. It is a simple non-divisive and non-partisan message for all, regardless of how they use the roads.

A black and red silicone wrist band is worn to explicitly honor those who lost their lives on the roadways (the black) and proclaim adherence to all traffic laws (the red). Professional triathlete coach Marc Evans founded the initiative in response to the tragic deaths of Matt Peterson and Kristy Gough, a professional triathlete, an IRONMAN age-group record holder, while cycling in California.  Anyone wanting to learn more or support this cause can buy wristbands and pledge cards at http://honorthestop.org/

By executing the BCC Membership Application, all BCC members agree to abide by traffic laws and observe cycling safety rules on our website.  We also encourage members to observe the rules of the City of Boulder's "Share the Road" program whether they are cycling or driving a vehicle. whether they are cycling or driving a vehicle.

By the way there are other incentives to obey traffic laws while cycling.  For instance a certain unnamed club member recently received a $100 fine for running a stop sign on his bike.

Join Us For a Cycling Movie!
8 PM Wednesday at Boulder Theater
Club members will be watching a great cycle race movie this Wednesday at 8 pm at the Boulder Theater, called "The Road to Roubaix".  Our event organizers, Jim and Sue Miers, will rally our group at the Lazy Dog roof deck bar at 6:30 PM for drinks and food, and then check out Bands on the Bricks on the way over to the theater.  The movie is general admission, so you can also meet us at the theater.

The film tells the story of the riders, mechanics, fans, and the brutal, unpredictable landscape that is the stage for the famous Paris-Roubaix cycling race.  It combines rare, behind-the-scenes footage, stunning panoramic views of the race route, a collection of contemporary photographs, as well as rare historic archival photographs that most people never see.

You can read more about the movie and buy tickets. Note, you can't avoid the service charge on Boulder Theater tickets by buying them at the box office or by phone, so you might as well buy them online.
