"GO BUILD GEORGIA" KICKS OFF WITH GEORGIA CAPITOL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT MEETING | | |
Above: Donnie Woodham, McKenney's, Inc., and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal recently announced the launch of a new skilled labor advance initiative known as Go Build Georgia. The program was announced during a press conference held at the Georgia Capital earlier this year.
"As a product of the Governor's Competitiveness Initiative, Go Build Georgia will work to address the skilled labor shortage in our state, and encourage students to choose post-secondary education," notes Tricia Pridemore, executive director of the Governor's Office of Workforce Development. "With a broad coalition of key stakeholders, our goal is to educate young people and the public at-large about the wage, lifestyle, and employment benefits in the skilled labor trades."
Governor Deal was enthusiastic about the program.
"By partnering with the private sector, this initiative will round out our workforce development program by educating young people and the public about the skilled trades," Governor Deal said during the Go Build Georgia launch press conference.
To further get the word out, the Governor's Office of Workforce Development has produced a circular designed to educate Georgians on the importance of this initiative. The circular is being distributed in more than 84 Georgia newspapers (for a total distribution of 1.3 million copies and readership of more than 3 million Georgians statewide). An additional 7,000 copies were distributed at the Skills USA Statewide Expo in mid March.

NCPWB CHAPTER 23 MEETS

The Georgia/Florida Chapter of the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau Board of Directors, along with invited guests, met recently.
Items of interest from the national Board of Directors Meeting included the following:
- New technical resources section on the NCPWB website in addition to the technical bulletins section.
- New welding procedure being developed for thermoplastic welding based on the 2013 version of Section IX which will have a section on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) butt fusion.
- Cajun Seeger has been appointed as a member of the newly created Welding Safety Task Force.
- Vickie Barger has been appointed chairman of the newly revised and expanded Chapter Operation/Welder Database Task Force.
Also in the spotlight during the Chapter meeting was a new PowerPoint presentation created by Cajun Seeger. The national Board of Directors has approved the PowerPoint presentation, and it will be used to train individuals from NCPWB member firms across the country who perform contractor representative duties during a joint UA/NCPWB testing event.
Cajun demonstrated the PowerPoint presentation during the Georgia/Florida Chapter meeting. This presentation, which is entitled "NCPWB Testing Event Policy and Procedure for Contractors Who Witness Test Events," received compliments from everyone, and the group also expressed its appreciation to Cajun for developing this presentation.
The PowerPoint presentation will be sent to the national office and will be posted to their web site for use by welding bureau chapters across the country.
During the meeting, various suggestions were made for using the presentation as a training tool locally. Among the recommendations was that the Georgia/Florida NCPWB sponsor a "Lunch and Learn" for current and potential contractor witnesses, job foremen, project managers and any others interested in learning what to look for in a quality weld and how to identify unacceptable defects. Another suggestion was to demonstrate the PowerPoint presentation to company owners and other attendees at a future MCA of Georgia membership meeting. Plans for both meetings will be announced soon.
After years of meetings, discussions, welder certification demonstrations, etc., it was announced that Southern Company is now accepting UA certified welders referred by Local 72 on a limited basis. Local 72 is anticipating a wider acceptance of UA certified welders as Southern Company is convinced that the certification program provides welders who can consistently produce quality welds.
The Annual NCPWB Technical Committee Meeting will be held at the Marriott Hilton Head Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, April 22 - 25, 2012.
