A large turnout of contractors and other industry representatives was on hand for the November meeting of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia.
| Jeffrey Hansler, The Oxford Co.
| The program for the November meeting was presented by Jeffrey Hansler, managing partner for the Oxford Company. He has been working exclusively with pipe trades locals in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas on an extensive project to increase market share for unions and union contractors.
Hansler noted that we, the union and contractors, need to have regular ongoing strategic planning that includes creative sessions, approaches and solutions to bring about change that would provide opportunity, risk reduction and profit. He added that would not only benefit the contractors but would also increase market share, union membership, and work hours.
Hansler discussed a number of techniques that can be used to achieve the necessary changes needed from contractors and unions if these goals are to be accomplished. He focused on three critical communication skills to guide organizations to the tools that will make them competitive in the marketplace. These included persuading people to be more productive, persuading foremen and supervisors to lead the Standard for Excellence, and persuading general contractors and end-users to choose you at a higher price than your competition.
Several special guests were present for the November meeting, including John Koontz, MCAA's National Education Initiative Director.

SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC TEAM MAKES FINAL FOUR IN MCAA STUDENT CHAPTER COMPETITION
| | |
MCAG congratulates the MCAG student chapter team from the Construction Management Department of Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) for being one of only four teams chosen for the MCAA student chapter competition finals.
A panel of four judges selected the four student chapter teams that will defend their project bid proposals at MCAA's 2012 annual convention to be held in March at Walt Disney World.
Other finalists include teams from Illinois State University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and California State University, Sacramento.
The four finalist teams scored best out of 27 entries from 26 MCAA student chapters and a team from Canada. The project involved the renovation of an historic building in downtown San Francisco into the Asian Art Museum, a job that actually took place about 10 years ago.
The finalist teams will compete for a first prize of $5,000. The runner-up will receive $2,500 and the other two finalists will each receive $1,000.
SPSU Student Team consists of Trent Anderson (team captain), Daniel Epps, Billy Hancock, Larnell Jewell, Brian Nelson, and Charles Wall. Other students who helped in research and pricing included Sean Barden, Eric Pagan, Tyrone Sheffield, and Phillip Young.
Professor Maureen Weidner served as the Team Adviser and is also the faculty advisor in charge of the MCAA Student Chapter at SPSU.

JOHN KOONTZ SPOTLIGHTS CHANGE ORDER MANAGEMENT AT MIC FALL SUPERVISORY WORKSHOP
| |

Change order management was in the spotlight at MIC's 2011 Fall Supervisory Workshop. This workshop, which consisted of two four-hour training sessions, was led by John Koontz, MCAA's national director for project management and advanced supervisory education.
The workshop was especially directed toward project managers, field supervision, foremen, as well as inside personnel who desire to know about this subject.
 | | John Koontz, MCAA's national director for project management and advanced supervisory education. |
Topics covered during the first four-hour session focused on "Procedures for Successfully Managing Change Orders." This session included a study of basic change order management procedures as detailed in the Change Order section of the MCAA Project Manager's Manual. This session discussed how change orders can be profitable only if managed properly.
The second four-hour session focused on "Analyzing, Identifying, and Calculating the Real Cost of Project Changes." Participants learned how to identify and calculate the cost impacts of changed project conditions on mechanical projects. This session included a look at how project managers who manage multiple projects are plagued daily with the disruption and aggravation of change orders. The session also included a look at how managing change is critical for project profitability and success.
Participants were enthusiastic about the workshop. One described it as "very effective and worthwhile," while another noted that he "always enjoy coming to learn and take home valuable material that Koontz presents to us." He added that the day was "greatly enjoyed!" |
