GEORGIA STATE APPRENTICESHIP COMPETITION
HELD IN ATLANTA
and
LU 72 & MCAG APPRENTICESHIP COMPETITORS GOING ON TO DISTRICT 3 COMPETITION IN NEW ORLEANS!

The Georgia State Apprenticeship Competition was held recently in Atlanta. This year's event drew apprentices from LU 72 as well as from Augusta, Brunswick and Savannah.

Representing LU 72 & MCAG apprenticeship program in the competition were Nathan Merritt, Merritt & Sons Plumbing, plumbing; Dillinger McCue, K&B Mechanical Contractors, welding; Kevin Van Horn, McKenney's Inc., pipefitting; and John Freeman, McKenney's Inc., HVAC.

Participants in the competition had their skills put to the test over two days of intense evaluation. In addition to a comprehensive written exam, each competitor was challenged to complete several practical hands-on exercises. These exercises were designed to challenge competitors with a variety of real-world situations while simultaneously testing their skills.

At the conclusion of the competition, LU 72 & MCAG apprentices Nathan Merritt, Dillinger McCue, Kevin Van Horn, and John Freeman had each earned top state honors in their respective fields.

What's next for the winners? As the top finishers in the state competition, Merritt, McCue, Van Horn and Freeman will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, June 7-9 for the District 3 UA Apprenticeship Competition. They will be competing against apprentices from as war away as Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas in hopes of earning top District honors as well.

Competitors stepped up to take on the challenges of competition, completing projects according to detailed plans and specs.

Several suppliers had displays of tools and information of interest to the competitors in the Georgia State Apprenticeship Competition.




Winners of the competition will go on to participate in the District 3 UA Apprenticeship Competition in New Orleans June 7-9. MCAG JUNE MEETING TO FEATURE JOHN YALE

 

The June meeting of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia, scheduled for June 7 at the Georgian Club, will feature a presentation by John Yale.

 

Yale, who will discuss "Standard of Excellence: Taking the Next Steps," resides in Scottsdale, Ariz.  

 

Our speaker graduated from the UA Local 469 apprenticeship program as a Steamfitter in 1970. He was a partner with J.B. Rodgers Mechanical Contractors, in Phoenix, Ariz.,from 1980-1998, and from 1998-2005 he was CEO/President of TriMega-Joint Venture between Kinetics and Air Products and Chemicals.  

 

He is a past chairman of the MCAA Education Committee.

 

Presently, Yale assists the UA's ITF program by presenting the United Association Standard of Excellence and how to implement it. At the June meeting, he will be speaking on LU 72's commitment to assisting contractors in having the best workplace ethics.

 

The meeting will begin at 11 a.m. at the Georgian Club, located at 100 Galleria Parkway, Suite 1700, in Atlanta.
