MCAG HOSTS ANNUAL INSTALLATION DINNER

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia recently held its 2011 installation dinner.
John McKenney, McKenney's Inc., was installed as MCAG's 2011 president.
Other officers for 2011 include Jon Sterling, senior vice president, Maxair, Inc.; Andy Sumpter, treasurer, Player and Company; Bill Flynn, immediate past president, Mallory & Evans Service Copmany; and directors Ken Harbour, Cleveland Mechanical Services; Bill Doty, K&B Mechanical Contractors; John Helms, W.B. Wallis & Company; and Jim C. Thomas, J.S. Thomas Mechanical. Gary Fowler is chief executive officer of MCAG.

Following the presentation, President McKenney took a moment to address those present. He underlined the importance of several issues, placing particular emphasis on the matter of jobsite safety awareness. He underscored the importance of craftsmen being able to identify safety issues and protecting themselves from jobsite hazards, and he noted the importance of pushing for zero injuries among all MCAG contractors.

During the evening's program, president Armistead spoke to the group, commenting on key issues and on MCAG's activities.

JOHN GILMAN, VICE PRESIDENT, BUSINESS RECRUITMENT FOR THE METRO ATLANTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, ADDRESSES MCAG MEMBERSHIP MEETING

 John Gilman, vice president, business recruitment, for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, was the featured speaker at MCAG's November membership meeting.
Gilman spoke on the economic development work of the Atlanta Chamber for the greater Atlanta area. He also shared insights into the current state of the local economy and what appears to lie ahead.
Following his presentation, Gilman answered a number of questions from those present at the meeting.

MCAA NATIONAL PRESIDENT BOB ARMISTEAD ADDRESSES MCAG JANUARY BOARD MEETING
| | Mechanical Contractors Association of America president Bob Armistead, Armistead Mechanical, Inc., Waldwick, N.J., addressed the recent January board meeting of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia. In his remarks, president Armistead updated the group on recent MCAA activities, including efforts by the United Association to promote energy and green policy.
President Armistead also shared the most recent result of the joint meetings of the MCAA and UA executive officers, that being a training school for new business managers. MCAA will furnish instructors for the school.
He also reviewed the success of the ITF scholarship program.
In addition, he noted that it was his observation across the country that all LUs are continuing to lose market share.
President Armistead continued with a look at what is going on in Washington. He talked about several issues. Among the topics he discussed were energy and green policy, the crackdown on the misclassification of workers as independent contractors by others in the industry, and bidding reforms. He also commented on the repeal of the 3 percent withholding tax on public contracts.
He commented at length on the Financial Accounting Standards Board's (FASB) accounting standards, which would require numerous additional disclosures on the financial statements of employers participating in multi-employer benefit plans.
Several MCAG past presidents, including Jeff Cotton (Player & Company), Marty Mann (Mann Mechanical Company) and Grant Willis (Willis Mechanical, Inc.) were present.

FOUR-HOUR FOREMAN CLASS HELD AT UNION HALL 72

LU 72 recently hosted a four-hour Foreman Class at Union Hall 72. The class was led by JATT Director Lance Streetman and by Jeffrey Hansler of the Oxford Company, a nationally known California-based firm that specializes in coaching people to attain their full potential. The highly interactive class focused on communication skills in four key areas -- UA Standards of Excellence, Leadership, Conflicts, and Safety. It provided communication skills training to foremen to help them establish new levels of cooperation and understanding to increase the competitiveness of union contractors in the current marketplace. The class also provided a forum for sharing information with the foremen on initiatives undertaken by LU 72 and backed by the UA to increase union contractor competitiveness in the marketplace by increasing commitment to the partnership between union contractors and LU 72.
