CAJUN SEEGER, WELDING DIRECTOR AT MECHANICAL TRADES INSTITUTE'S WELDING TECHNOLOGY CENTER, PREVIEWS PRE-TEST BRIEFING FOR NCPWB CHAPTER 23 MEMBERSHIP AND BOARD MEETING
| | |
Cajun Seeger, Welding Director at the Mechanical Trades Institute's Welding Technology Center, recently attended a joint meeting of the Georgia/Florida Chapter of NCPWB and presented a hands-on welding inspection seminar and a review of how to handle a joint UA/NCPWB weld test inspection.
During his presentation, Cajun also previewed his pre-test briefing Power Point presentation.
Some of the topics covered in this pre-test briefing include the following:
* ASME Section IX Code
* Weld Teest Specifications
* Visual Inspections
* Safety in Welding
Specific factors considered included time limits for weld tests; excessive and prolonged grinding on weld test coupons; misalignment tolerances; tack length, location and limits; and weld progression.
Cajun noted that visual inspections must be conducted after tacking and fit up. After the root pass and the completed test, assembly must be visually examined over the entire circumference, inside and outside, showing complete joint penetration with complete fusion of weld metal and base metal (no concavity). It shall be uniform and free of cracks, incomplete fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity, slag and undercut (not to exceed 1/32").
Other guidelines include the following:
* Do not file or grind on the completed test coupon.
* Do not remove coupon from the holding clamp.
* Power brush cleaning is allowed.
* Arc marks or arc strikes outside of the weld zone are not acceptable.
Cajun also discussed approval for restarts, continuity, expired certifications, and safety.
Approval for restarts: The coupon rejected may have only one issue that fails to meet UA acceptance criteria. It must be evident that the welder is experienced in the process used. Two or more indications will void the test, and the welder shall undergo further training in that process.
Continuity: Continuity is the welders' responsibility. Welder certifications expire every six months. 2008 ASME Section IX Code changes require a contractor representative to sign off on all continuity. ATR's can no longer grant continuity at the Authorized Testing Facility (ATF) without a contractor present.
Expired certifications: Expired certifications are renewed by passing a test using the same welding process. Filler materials and the coupon used have no bearing on the renewal of an expired certification. Example: By passing a test using the GTAW/SMAW combination, your SMAW is renewed and you now have a new certification. Make your test count; do not duplicate tests if you have the ability and skill in another process.
Safety: 100 percent safety required: Keep safety glasses on at all times, sharpen tungsten on approved tools, use dry gloves, use fume removal, good working hood, don't weld or work with any equipment that is damaged, and use the proper personal protection required during the test.
