MIC Fall Supervisory Workshop
|
|
MIC held its 2008 Fall Supervisory Workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Holiday Inn Select Atlanta Perimeter-Dunwoody.
This year's workshop featured two great presentations by John Koontz, MCAA's national director for project management and advanced supervisory education. John brings a balance of academic and practical experience to his courses. At this year's workshop, he spoke on two topics of critical importance:
- Productivity Improvement: Material Management and Site Planning Methods
- The Foreman's Role in Project Documentation
These sessions targeted foremen, field journeymen who want to become foremen; they were also ideal for other field supervision and inside personnel who desire to know about these subjects.
The workshop began with a continental breakfast. Participants then moved into the two seminar sessions. Session 1: "Productivity Improvement: Material Management and Site Planning Methods"
Poor site planning and material management/handling practices are often the greatest causes of poor labor productivity. Participants in this workshop learned how material management and labor productivity are related and also learned strategies for improving material handling and site planning. This session reviewed practical principles, guidelines, and procedures for effective material management and site planning. Session 2: "The Foreman's Role in Project Documentation"
The focus of this session was on an examination of the role of the jobsite supervisor in creating daily, indisputable project documentation. During the session, participants reviewed the basic types of and uses for project documentation and learned methods that can be used to improve documentation effectiveness. The steps for planning and implementing the documentation process for a mechanical construction project were also reviewed.

MCA of Georgia "LUNCH and LEARN" Series Spotlights "E-Verify and Georgia's Security and Immigration Compliance Act
|
|
The early October installment of MCAG's popular "LUNCH and LEARN" series focused on "E-Verify and Georgia's Security and Immigration Compliance Act.

Philip J. Siegel of the law firm of Hendrick, Phillips, Salzman and Flatt, discussed a number of topics arising from this Act.
Among the topics covered:
- Understanding E-Verify, Form I-9 and the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act
- What actions are required
- How this affects your business and your ability to hire and retain workers
- Your obligations concerning both your contracts upstream with owners or general contractors and concerning their contracts downstream with subcontractors
- Additional obligations of covered businesses
|
MCA of Georgia "LUNCH and LEARN" Series Continues! |
|
Another MCAG October "LUNCH and LEARN" meeting featured a special presentation by David Hendrick of the law firm of Hendrick, Phillips, Salzman and Flatt.
David's program, which he calls "Forget What You Knew About The Georgia Lien Law: Changes For March 2009," focused on what you need to know about recent Lien Law changes. Focus on recent legislative changes
In the last legislative session, many changes, both substantive and procedural, were adopted, and the recently added revisions will not go into effect until March 31, 2009. Because there are a significant number of substantive changes, everyone in the construction industry - owners, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers - needs to understand these new requirements in order to effectively protect their lien rights and remedies and property and enforce their lien rights going forward - and this program was especially designed to provide that needed understanding.
The perennially complex thicket of "lien law" becomes more complex with these changes, which create many "traps for the unwary." This educational session helped participants become better prepared by focusing on several areas of significant and substantive revisions to the Georgia Lien Law. Even though the changes won't be technically "effective" for several more months, they should and will have an immediate effect on construction contracting. Particular changes worth noting
Among notable changes are the following:
- There is new statutory and mandatory language and procedures for the "Interim Waiver and Release Upon Payment" and the "Waiver and Release Upon Final Payment" forms
- The time for filing a lien claim has changed
- New line claim language is now required - failure to include such language shall invalidate the lien and prevent it from being filed!
- Time for filing suit on the lien has changed
- Affidavits of non-payment requirements and procedures have changed
- A new "Contest of Lien" procedure has been added
