Careers 2008
Plumbing instructor Shane Strickland, left, discusses MTI curriculum with Plumbing apprentice Michael Hill
Michael Hill
Six years in various construction trades and Air Force veteran Michael Hill knew what career he wanted: That of a plumber.
Michael's experience in construction included working on Boston's "Big Dig" tunnels. In this and on other jobsites it was the plumbers that impressed him most.
And so he and his wife moved to Georgia and into a market he felt offered him the greatest opportunity to find his chosen career. In this move he had the help of an organization called "Helmets to Hard Hats" which assists military veterans in finding civilian careers in construction. The organization directed him to Local Union 72 of the UA and then it was on to apprenticeship training at the Mechanical Trades Institute which is supported by the local and by contractor members of the Mechanical Industries Council.
Michael is currently employed by McKenney's, Inc. and is installing water piping at the Athens Regional Hospital, now in Phase II of an expansion program. Other work assignments have included tenant buildouts, medical offices and the Mall of  Georgia.
Michael, his wife and two sons live in Dacula. The boys are sports enthusiasts so he does his share of assistant coaching. His hobbies are hunting and fishing, time permitting.
A third year apprentice, Michael is currently studying water supply and drainage, part of what he considers a "well rounded" curriculum and one he enjoys.

Jo Muncy
Service technician apprentice Jo Muncy in MTI's lab

Jo Muncy is a third year service technician apprentice at the Mechanical Trades Institute. She says she is sorry she did not begin the  trade years ago.
Jo came to Georgia with AT&T, a company she served for 31 years in construction and cable installation.
In addition to being here one day a week studying at MTI, she is employed by Johnson Controls where she is currently assisting in retrofitting systems to control computer room air conditioning systems. Servicing rooftop units and a number of preventive maintenance projects are among the varied assignments she has had.
Jo considers her day-long apprenticeship classes at MTI a big improvement over MTI's previous schedule in which apprentices attended classes two nights a week.
"It is easier to stay focused now," she says, "and it is a much better overall learning environment."

Walt Sperko
 Walt Sperko

Sperko was in Atlanta to conduct a Section 9 Seminar on ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel codes for architects and engineers.

 David Hendrick

At the November MCAG business meeting, David Hendrick, MCAG legal counsel, discussed Georgia sales and use taxes relating to fabrication and the problems identifying when these taxes apply.

MODERNIZED PLANT INSTALLS
PLAYER POWER BOOST
This is one of the water treatment plant's six 3000ph engines.
One of Metro Atlanta's most advanced raw water treatment plants is being expanded from its current 90 million gallons of water a day (MGD) to 135 MGD.
As part of this plant modernization and expansion, a 12 megawatt emergency standby system has been added to the site. Player and Company provided the design, construction and installation services including civil, mechanical, electrical, fire protection and finish painting for this powerful new installation.
Fueled by natural gas, the system, housed in a specially designed building adjacent to the water plant's electrical transformer field, will go online automatically with the disruption of electrical power. Its emergency electrical energy will be supplied by six 3000HP engines each driving a 2055kw electric generator. The system will produce over 12,000 volts of electricity.
This standby power system is one of a number of similar installations built by Player and Company to serve water supply and reclamation facilities in the country's ever-growing urban infrastructure.

Breslin Inspires!
Over 1300 union members from Atlanta locals know that it will take commitment, pride and dedication to assure their place in the construction industry. And, in response to the challenge, they resolved to do it.
The challenge was laid down by motivational lecturer Mark Breslin at a recent seminar sponsored by Local 72 and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia (MCAG) together with other area unions and contractor organizations.
The day-long meeting was held at the Atlanta Metropolitan College.  Local 72 was represented by 300 plumber, pipefitter and service technician journeymen along with a number of apprentices from the Mechanical Trades Institute (MTI).
"Breslin's rousing message was an inspiration to all," according to Gary Fowler, executive vice president & ceo of MCAG. His sentiments were echoed by Donnie Woodham, vice president field operations for McKenney's, Inc. and John Bailey, executive director of MTI.
Breslin reminded each attendee in his audience of union members that they "were the most important person in determining the future of union construction."
