KENTON SAUNDERS, JR.---MAKING A JOYFUL NOISE FOR THE GENERAL CONFERENCE
By Daviette Saunders

Kenton Neil Saunders, Jr. is the Director of the Music for the Fifth Episcopal District and leading the choir for the General Conference.  One of Wayman's own, Kenton will be in charge of the melodious sounds that will be heard throughout the America's Center July 4-11, 2008.

Kenton Neil Saunders, Jr., was singing for Jesus in the youth choir of Wayman AME Church at the age of three. At the age of four, Kenton began showing his interest in the piano and organ, and the following year began taking piano lessons at the Berry Jones and Foster Music Studio. He excelled at music at a remarkable rate and his instructors had to keep pulling him back to the lesson plan because his natural ear for music kept him venturing off on his own. Saunders would add to whatever he was playing and making it uniquely his music.

Kenton began to play for the youth choir at Wayman under the direction of his former music teacher Ernestine Jones-Gordon. He attended Lindberg High School where he became more than just another student--he formed their first gospel choir.

The Volunteers' Guide for the Wayman Nation and the General Conference
By Carla A. Owens

"Whatever you are volunteering to do-- study, ask questions and make sure that the buck stops with you," said Gary Boyd, Event Planner for the 48th Quadrennial Session of the AME General Conference. Boyd presented a workshop on providing the importance of hospitality to have an outstanding successful Conference in St. Louis.

HospitalityOver 30,000 people are expected to attend the weeklong Conference. In order to have a successful event, it is necessary for people in the Missouri Conference to take the lead in making guests feel welcome, happy, safe and spirit-filled.

Boyd stressed that from the moment the guests step off of the plane (and sometimes before), will determine if that individual's experience will be a good or a bad one. It is important to have volunteers at the airport manning the guest booths at all times, staying in contact with the persons providing transportation, being on time, having good and clear information on the Conference activities and establishments in St. Louis, and getting back with the person if they have a particular question that you cannot answer at that particular moment.   Click here for some of Gary's tips...
