"The People in the Pews" is a new feature for our website. We will present an article highlighting one of our members every month.
In my first conversation with Mr. Broomfield he said to me "I'm in to this AME thing all the way." Of course my immediate response was "Me too." After talking with Mr. Broomfield for one hour I now realize how naïve my response was. I am sure there are some people who have been members of Wayman longer than Mr. Broomfield but this is not about the passage of time. Although, Mr. Broomfield surpasses many on that score as well. Mr. Broomfield has been a member of the Wayman Nation for 54 years. He started attending Wayman when it was located on 23rd and Cole but he didn't "join". He "joined" Wayman when it moved to its present location 54 years ago. For Mr. Broomfield, "joining" Wayman was a significant commitment.
Mr. Broomfield was very clear about the responsibility he was undertaking. His father was an AME minister and he knew that this was much more than a Sunday retreat followed by brunch at Sweetie Pie's. But, he was ready to move his life in a new direction. As Mr. Broomfield says" "when I moved here in 1944, I was young and I had to get a few wild hairs out of the way." Ten years later Mr. Broomfield took control of those "wild hairs". He got married, started a family and joined the Wayman Nation.

Greetings!
Can you believe that the summer is really here? And yes, it is truly a busy summer. Not only do we have Father's Day, school graduations, and political activity; this summer is the 2008 General Conference of the AME Church. And, it is right here in the Gateway City-St. Louis, Missouri. The Missouri Conference is the host Conference, and the Wayman Nation will play a significant role in helping this General Conference be the most successful in AME history. But, as we prepare for the 40,000 people that will descend on our city within the next few weeks, we cannot forget about one of this season's most significant occasions-the 38th Annual Bessie M. Pointer Cotillion. This event is one of Wayman's most successful activities, as we honor and present our young people to society. The funds raised for this event are used to provide scholarships for the participants. Our students have been able to attend colleges and universities all across the country due to generosity of our members in supporting this Cotillion. So get your ticket today! The Pressure is On !
Hypertension is a condition that occurs when the pressure inside your large arteries is too high. Fifty million Americans alone are affected by hypertension. It is more serious and common in African-Americans. Studies show that nine out of every ten people have hypertension, but do not have a cause that can be identified. Because it is a silent disorder, the only way to detect hypertension is to have your blood pressure measured. You can inherit the tendency to hypertension from your parents. If one parent has hypertension, you will more than likely develop it. If both parents have hypertension it is highly likely that you will too. There are other less common causes of hypertension. Most causes are do to disorders of the kidneys or endocrine glands. You cannot choose your parents, but you can help reduce your chances of getting hypertension by leading a healthy life style.
