"The People in the Pews" is a new feature for our website. We will  present an article highlighting one of our members every month.

Ms. Bessye D. Long:
A Natural Pearl
 by Hope E. Whitehead, Esq
.
Have you ever met one of those people who give the phrase "church home" a whole new meaning? Have you ever met someone whose very existence embodies the phrase "church home"? Have you ever met someone whose spirit is like a warm blanket you just want to cuddle up next to? Have you ever met someone who has that perfect balance between a soft touch, yet a strong hand?

For Bessye Long, home is church and church is home. Ms. Bessye (as I like to call her) has been a member of Wayman for almost as long as I have been on this earth.

Greetings!

Dr. Tyler1 May means the azaleas are blooming, summer plans are finalized and we are less than two months away from the 48th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference here in St. Louis, MO.  But May also represents an important month in Christianity, our church, and the St. Louis community.

We kick off this month with National Foster Care Month, a time to raise awareness about the hundreds of thousands of young people in our nation's foster care system and 24,000 who "age out" every year, a large percentage of them African American. On May 11, 2008, the second Sunday of May, we honor the "Faith of Our Mothers", the nurturers of the Wayman Nation and the world. Mothers hold their children's hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.

Also this May 11 (the fiftieth day after Easter), we celebrate Pentecost, the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus' mother and family, and many other of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish harvest festival that was celebrated on the fiftieth day of Passover.  While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. The disciples were suddenly empowered to proclaim the gospel of the risen Christ. (see Acts 2:1-41).   Click here to continue.
