SkillsUSA Alabama "Best of the Best"

This month students from all over Alabama will travel to Birmingham, AL to compete at the annual Skills USA - Alabama conference. The conference will be held at the BJCC April 27-28, 2010.

SkillsUSA is a career tech service organization designed to help enhance career and technical education skills as well as foster leadership in Alabama's youth comprised of K-12 as well as community college students.  SkillsUSA strives to meet the needs of three primary groups: Students, Educators and Business and Industry. SkillsUSA  is dedicated to helping its members develop solid technical, leadership, and employability skills. In addition, the organization supports and rewards the efforts of its members through professional development and recognition programs.

Students may participate in three types of contests: Leadership, Occupationally Related, and Skilled and Technical Sciences and they are judged by business and industry representatives. Competitions spotlight skills in various career fields such as cosmetology, welding, masonry, TV and video production, crime scene investigation, firefighting and automated manufacturing, just to name a few. Although most of the contests are held at the BJCC , several are held offsite at local community colleges and  business and industry sites.

A Career Expo, hosted by AIDT is held in conjunction with conference on April 28th. The EXPO allows industry and business representatives to meet their future workforce. It will also expose students to potential employers and make them aware of available career choices and the skills and education needed to pursue those careers. Anyone interested in showcasing their business/industry or in bringing students can contact Jacqueline Allen at AIDT (jallen@aidt.edu).

According to State Director, Myron Lamont, Alabama SkillsUSA is making every attempt to make SkillsUSA membership a "value added" component of Technical Education. "We have, for the last 5 years looked for ways to better serve our publics. For the first time nationally recognized industry developed Employability Skills and Technical assessments are being used as part of Championship competitions that take place in Birmingham" Lamont stated.

SkillsUSA Alabama has experienced a lot of growth as evidenced by a membership that is now approaching 10,000 members - a 10 year high after 5 straight years of sustained growth. Lamont says he's often asked why their attempting growth during such tough economic times, "Too many people have worked too hard, for too long making Technical Education and SkillsUSA an important force in Alabama, we owe them and our students our best effort." Borrowing a strategy from NASCAR, 'There is no better time to out-maneuver and out-plan the competition than when you're in the turns. Anybody can put the pedal to the metal in the straight-a-ways!''

The SkillsUSA state competition is a showcase event for career and technology students from all over the state. The students that win at the state conference continue on to the national competition. Last year 97 students represented Alabama at the national level and they did very well with top honors going to Alabama in both K-12 and postsecondary divisions for welding.

Alabama's career/technical education (CTE) programs offer students opportunities to participate in seven different student organizations including SkillsUSA. Currently, one out of every two high school students in Alabama participates in CTE programs. To learn more about SkillsUSA or any of the other great educational opportunities offered by Alabama's CTE programs, contact SkillsUSA State Director, Myron Laurent, at (334) 353-4522 or visit www.skillsalabama.org.
