Maritime Science Center launched in Mobile

Maritime Science Center.jpg

Alabama may become a maritime world leader through the expanded maritime science and shipbuilding technology at the Maritime Science Center launched in Mobile on June 29. Construction of the center is planned to be completed in April 2010 and the expanded training will begin in May.

The center's mission is to provide a technically trained, highly-skilled, and educated workforce for maritime-related technologies, and to promote the growth and expansion of companies through maritime science education.

AIDT launched maritime training in Mobile in 2007 to provide job seekers with qualifications and skills needed to join the growing maritime industry. Atlantic Marine, Bender Shipbuilding, C&G Boatworks and Austal USA partnered with AIDT to expand maritime training to help fill their jobs.

Intensive welding and shipfitting training continues at the Maritime Welding Center in Brookley Complex at 1890 3rd Street. AIDT is also providing maritime welding training at Bryant Career Technical Center in Irvington. The 10-week training programs teach aluminum and steel welding techniques and shipfitting as well as other shipbuilding skills based on employers' production processes. Trainees also demonstrate work ethics and experience in related skills while training which assists employer hiring selections. Training is available at no cost.

A recent trainee who says he was "underemployed and unsatisfied in the work place" got employed in March while completing training. He describes the training as "challenging, enjoyable, and life changing."

"I was underskilled and my job prospects were bleak to say the least," said ship welder Yehuda Silverwolf. "A friend told me about the AIDT Maritime Welding School ad he had seen in the Mobile Press-Register and on his suggestion, I followed up on the lead. The instructors guided us through the classroom information and hands-on training like professionals. They were always there to teach and lend a hand. Everyone involved in this school deserves big congratulations for the work they do, shaping a new generation of welders and shipfitters for the demands of an industry vital to the Alabama gulf coast. My experience with the AIDT Maritime School was challenging, enjoyable, and life changing."

Another trainee now employed also appraised the maritime trainers.

"The instructors take their time with each student, meeting you on your level," said ship welder Tony Jeter. "I personally had never seen a welding machine up close before. Now, I can weld. There were both men and women doing well in my class. Before the course was complete I had been hired locally as a ship fitter receiving very good pay. I recently graduated from class and have been accepted with Northrup-Grumman as a third-class welder."

High School Maritime Apprenticeship class, also conducted by AIDT, opened in 2008 for Mobile area high school students. Applications are located in counselor offices at area high schools. Each apprentice receives $8 hourly wages while in training. Successful apprenticeship students at least 18 years old have been hired as full-time employees.

AIDT will use the Maritime Science Center to provide multi-purpose training and education to assist a variety of maritime/shipbuilding companies in the Mobile area and throughout Alabama. The facility will assist various expansion projects, such as Atlantic Marine, Austal, Bender and C&G Boats. The facility will also be used by the Alabama Community College System for various maritime programs and by individual companies that need specific training or contract projects.

The 60,000-square-foot Maritime Science Center will include welding shops and labs that meet OSHA specifications, other high bay shops, appropriate class rooms, restrooms, offices and more.

The Maritime Science Center is designed to provide:
