On The Job visits with Thompson Tractor in Birmingham to learn what is needed to become a heavy equipment mechanic. On The Job host Bobby Jon Drinkard is assisting bulldozer drive mechanize installation in the photo above. Thompson Tractor provides a diverse array of customer services in four divisions: Thompson Tractor Company, Thompson Power Systems, Thompson Lift Truck Company, and The Thompson Cat Rental Store. Thompson, founded in 1957, has full-service facilities in Alabama at Birmingham, Decatur, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Oxford/Annistion, Shelby County, Thomasville, and Tuscaloosa, and in Florida at Panama City and Pensacola.

AIDB photo.jpgMay 17/May 19: On The Job joined staff and students enhanced by services and programs at Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind in Talladega. The comprehensive education, rehabilitation and employment system serves deaf, blind and multi-disabled children and adults. With five campuses and nine regional centers throughout the state, AIDB has aided thousands of infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors challenged by hearing and vision loss more than 150 years.

Wallace Medical Tech photo.jpgMay 24/May 26: On The Job partners with Wallace Community College's Radiologic Technologist program at Flowers Hospital in Dothan to train medical workforce. Learn about the different types of radiology, and what is involved in training for this field. and find recent technological changes in Radiologic technology. On The Job also goes to Union Springs to visit one of the largest green house operations in the country. Bonnie Plant Farm started as a backyard garden in 1918,  and has become a multi-million dollar plant operation serving plants and herbs to 49 states and Canada.

Current AIDT Projects.jpgCurrently assisting 83 employers in 34 Alabama counties, AIDT provides quality workforce development for new and expanding businesses in Alabama, and  expands career opportunities for citizens through jobs the businesses create.

Current recruitment is designed to fill jobs with Plus Diagnostics in Baldwin County; AJIN USA Joon LLC, Daeki America Inc., MP Tech America Corp in Chambers County; National Alabama Corp. in Colbert County; MFG Galileo Composites in Covington County; Sejong/Alabama in Lowndes County; ThyssenKrupp Steel & Stainless USA LLC and Ryla Teleservices in Mobile County; and, Boeing Company in Morgan County.

In addition to these 10 employers, AIDT pre-employment, post-employment, and on-the-job training continues with 73 other employers.

AIDT, part of the Alabama Community College System, encourages economic development through job-seeker assessment and job-specific training. Training services are provided at no charge for new and expanding businesses that qualify for AIDT services and for trainees seeking to fill those jobs.

AIDT training services include:
  • Recruitment
  • Trainee selection based on review of application forms and interviews of applicants
  • Pre-employment training is designed to identify each trainee's skills, capabilities and learning ability
  • On-The-Job training for successful trainees who are employed provides introduction to and familiarity with specific job functions
Additional AIDT training services include:
  • Leadership Development for team leaders and supervisors to develop quality leaders, improve retention and create employee loyalty and dedication
  • Maintenance Assessment designed to help employers determine who to hire, promote and train for maintenance service through written and performance assessments
  • Safety Assistance provides information and resources needed to meet U.S. Occupation Safety & Health Administration requirements
  • Process Improvement Assessment provides an independent third-party review of business processes related to lean manufacturing.
  • AIDT Extra assists businesses that do not traditionally qualify for AIDT services and provides development of employee recruitment, trainer services, success principles, performance assessment, creation of training manuals and workbooks, multimedia instructor guides and training aids and videographic company information.
Job seekers may also get help to prepare for employment through the 22 comprehensive community colleges and four technical colleges, Athens State University and Alabama Technology Network in addition to AIDT.

The Alabama Community College System provides general education and other collegiate programs at the freshman and sophomore levels to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions to complete baccalaureate degrees, as well as an upper division university that provides selected baccalaureate programs.

ACCS Adult Education focuses on improving individuals' skills, productivity and training with GED preparation and testing, basic skills, and English as a Second Language.

ACCS workforce development initiatives provide customized, flexible, short-term training programs that are responsive to industry needs-from highly specialized training to programs that help prepare entry-level employees to meet growing demands.

AIDT also provides Interview T.I.P.S. and Skills@Work to help job seekers obtain skills and qualifications needed for employment.

Interview T.I.P.S. (Training to Improve Presentation Skills) helps job seekers prepare to submit correct applications, demonstrate confidence, improve communication skills with mock interviews and proper interview follow-up.

Skills@Work provides informaion needed to prepare for job interviews, computer skills, diversity and sexual harassment prevention.

Ready To Work, operated by ACCS Division of Workforce Development in cooperation with the AIDT, provides a career pathway for adults with limited education and employment experience. AIDT helps prepare Ready To Work instructors.

Louis Lockhart
Former AIDT employee Louis C. Lockhart died peacefully on April 9, 2009, after a brief illness. Memorial service was held in Opelika and graveside service was conducted at in Tennille, GA.

Born November 16, 1947, in Tennille, GA, Louis Lockhart had successful careers in economic development working in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
