ThyssenKrupp Training Center to be completed June 2009

TK training center plan

Construction of the $12 million ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA training center located near Calvert, in north Mobile County, will be completed in June 2009 while AIDT continues recruiting and training job seekers at temporary locations.

Successful AIDT trainees have begun filling ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA maintenance and operator jobs needed. AIDT recruitment and training designed to identify and prepare the best qualified job seekers opened in January 2008 and will continue until all jobs are filled in 2009 and 2010. Job fairs conducted in December by ThyssenKrupp and AIDT in Robertsdale and Prichard attracted thousands of job seekers in addition to several thousand applicants already being assessed.

The 46,500-square-foot training center, provided by the state through AIDT, will provide labs, open shop, classrooms, computer centers, conference rooms, staff offices and a multi-purpose room that will seat more than 300 people.

"This facility will be equipped with the latest technology based on ThyssenKrupp specifics," said AIDT Director Ed Castile. "The state, through AIDT, is proud to be a full partner with ThyssenKrupp."

The training center will be used for pre-employment and post-employment training for ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA. Specific skills training facilities will include hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC, quality, welding, machining, assembly techniques, gearing, electronic trouble shooting, crane operations, melt shop, hot roll, cold roll, hot dip galvanizing, finishing and many others.

Computer technology and professional development courses will also be conducted in the training center. Equipment used in training will be state of the art.

"The Alabama state unemployment rate is on the rise due to the downturn in the economy and the jobs being created by ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA will certainly boost the local economy," said AIDT Project Manager Lee Hammett.

Applications for AIDT training are still available for interested job seekers. To apply online, click here for operator or maintenance positions with ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA. The website address is www.jobs.aidt.edu/steel.
