 | | In recovery. Again. |
Greetings!
First of all, thanks very much to all of our generous donors in the past week! We've raised almost a third of Rocky's original medical costs, which is our most successful fund-raiser ever.
Rocky had another round of surgery today - the open wounds on his left hind legs were stitched, he was microchipped and he was neutered. Stitched, chipped and clipped, as they say.
Thanks again to the staff of Rutherford Veterinary Hospital for taking such excellent care of our first foster!
To keep up with his progress, please visit his website at http://www.sparkypals.org/rocky.

You'll notice Rocky is sporting a new fashion accessory this week. It's called an e-Collar (from "Elizabethan", not "electronic"), and it's designed to make sure that puppies can't reach incisions, stitches or other wounds to lick them. He can still lean down (as seen above) to sniff things, eat food or drink, but he can't reach anything else.
We had a small e-Collar from one of our personal dog's earlier misfortunes, so we let Rocky borrow it.
 | | Torn Up | This is the crate pad with the small e-Collar. Oops. Rocky has since graduated to a larger e-Collar, and he's not chewing up nearly as much.

Two Surgeries, Two Weeks Rocky's first surgery was to repair his broken femurs. However, his left leg was badly damaged and his skin had been torn away. This week, we washed and re-wrapped his wounds daily (and then re-wrapped them again when he took the bandages off.) When Dr. Young rechecked him on Thursday, she thought the wounds were healed sufficiently to be sutured closed. So, today (May 11th), he had surgery again to suture his wounds closed.
Since he was under anesthesia, we decided this was a good time for the "big clip." Dallas City Ordinance requires all pets to be spayed or neutered, with very few exceptions. Texas State Law requires that all organizations that adopt animals must spay or neuter the animal before adoption. Also, Sparky's Pals thinks spay and neuter is a good idea! So, we decided to save him another round of anesthesia down the road.
Microchipping can be done without anesthesia, but for smaller dogs, the needle used to insert the chip can be painful, so we just added that in, as well.
If Rocky escapes again, he can find his way back to his foster home. Remember if you adopt a pet (we hope you do!), ask about his microchip and how to update his address from the rescue or shelter to yours. Also, add to your moving "to-do" list to always update the microchip contact information for all your pets.

Back on the Road To Recovery
 | | Rocky |
So, after another rather extensive visit to the veterinarian, Rocky is back on the road to recovery.
His stitches from his femur operation will be removed next week. His stitches from today will be removed the week after that. Then, he can continue down the road to recovery.
Rockford J FosterPuppy has had another very challenging week. However, it looks like he's met the challenge and is ready to move on.
