June 2008
Sparky in the yard Greetings!

Happy Birthday to the USA! (Remember, many pets don't really like fireworks!)

June brought  presentations at multiple branches of the Dallas Public Library, plus our annual visit to Petzapalooza at the main branch downtown. As Spring passes to Summer, we'll be slowing down the number of events so we can prepare for the upcoming school year. Have a good summer break!

Petzapalooza 2008

Petzapalooza 2008

Petzapalooza 2008 was held at the main branch of the Dallas Library on June 21, 2008. We had presentations all day, and a good turnout! We had crafts and Storytime for children and presentations on basic pet health care and pet costs for parents. Our thanks to the Dallas Public Library Business and Technology staff for sponsoring the event! We hope to see even more people at next year's event which is scheduled for June 20, 2009. (Mark your calendars!)
Be A Tree

A Forest

Here's a forest of visitors at Petzapalooza, since we practice being trees at most of our events with children.

Remember, if a strange dog approaches you, be a tree! If you're on the ground, be a rock. Never stare directly at a strange dog, as that's considered a challenge. Dogs aren't interested in stationary objects, but will chase moving ones. Don't become prey, just stand quietly, with your arms at your sides, looking up. Be a tree! (To be a rock, just curl up, with your hands over your ears.) After the dog has left the area, you're safe. Make sure your children know to tell an adult there is a loose dog.

For more information, visit Doggone Safe or come to one of our events.

Sparky's Pals would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and sympathy in the loss of Rose Marie Pesce, mother of two of our board members, and mother-in-law of a third.

We'd also like to acknowledge our generous donors to the Rose Marie Pesce Memorial Fund.

Dallas Animal Ordinances

The Dallas City Council passed a number of new animal ordinances late in June, which had the support of much of the animal rescue community. While some did not feel it was a perfect package, I think most agreed that something needed to be done, and this is a start.

Remember there is already a State anti-tethering law in place, so if you see animals tied to a stake or a tree in violation of the statute, you can report the violation to your local animal control. Many cities and towns have passed stricter measures or are considering them.

The Dallas Animal Advocates site provides information on the ordinances and their  effects.
Spot The Error!

Editor Ripley It's Ripley's second month to proof-read the newsletter, since nobody reported any errors last month. Good job, Ripley!

As always, any errors you find (as highly unlikely as that may be, although it's getting more likely each month) should be reported to kjg@sparkypals.org for a free mention in the newsletter next month.
The rest of Summer 2008 should be a time to recharge for next year's events, although we do still have some events planned - try to stay cool, everyone! Storytime at Barnes & Noble next Saturday, the 12th!

Sincerely,

Kevin Gilhooly
