Sparky in the yard Greetings!

This newsletter is probably as late as one has ever been. Unfortunately, there is a good reason - my mother-in-law Rose Pesce was admitted into Medical City Dallas on Memorial Day, and passed away last Saturday, June 7, 2008. I'm sure Sparky met her at the Bridge, even though she always called him "the grey one", since there were too many dogs around our house to remember all their names. Please remember Rose (and the rest of her family) in your thoughts and prayers.

May saw the first annual Sparky's Pals Open miniature golf tournament, the Career Day at Western Hills Elementary in Ft Worth, various Girl Scout presentations and Storytimes. June will bring visits to library branches throughout Dallas, plus Petzapalooza at the Dallas Library Main Branch downtown.

A Personal Note For Dallas Citizens from Kevin Gilhooly

The Dallas City Council is considering a number of new animal ordinances and should have a final vote on them in late June. While the proposals may not be a perfect solution, I believe they are better than what we have now.

There is a site you can visit with a lot of information on the proposed ordinances hosted by the Dallas Animal Advocates.

While Sparky's Pals is not a lobbying organization, I personally urge everyone who lives in Dallas to review the information and contact your council member with your views. It's an important subject to discuss and it could help save pets' lives.
Sparky's Pals Open

Simmons ClanThe first annual Sparky's Pals Open miniature golf tournament was held on May 18, 2008 at SpeedZone in Dallas. We had a good turnout for a warm day. We also had players by proxy from across the country!

The winners in the Adult Category were
  1. Stephen Gilhooly
  2. Russell Simmons
  3. Julia Hunt, John Gilhooly (tie)
Congratulations to all our winners and a special thanks to Russell, who was our only in-person winner as the rest of the finalists played by proxy!

We had players from all over Dallas, New York and Florida. Our thanks to all the participants.
Petzapalooza 2008 - June 21

Petzapalooza 2007Petzapalooza is an all-day event celebrating pets and pet lovers on June 21, 2008 from 10:00am until 4:00pm at the J. Erik Jonsson Public Library in downtown Dallas. Sparky's Pals will have kids' crafts and presentations for adults, so drop by the library and meet some fellow pet lovers!
Summertime Blues

High TemperaturesRemember the Texas heat this summer! It you're getting warm, think what it's like wearing a fur coat!

Never leave your pets inside a parked car, even with the windows cracked. Make sure you have plenty of fresh, cold water available for your pets.

There are more warm-weather tips on our website.
Last Month's Error Spotters

Oops!
We had two people report anonymously that I misspelled "children" in the last newsletter, so the award goes to Patricia Gulino who also reported it, and allowed us to use her name.  (There's no reason to hide about finding my error, folks!)

I suppose if we ever grow enough to hire staff, we will need a proof-reader.  The tragic part is that the original "Spot The Error" was a joke - I had spell-checked and proof-read the newsletter and there weren't any errors! Since then, I've managed to miss something every month. I guess I won't have to put mistakes in on purpose after all.
Spot The Error!

Editor Ripley It's Ripley's turn to proof-read the newsletter this month, and here's hoping he does a better job than some of the others in the household!

As always, any errors you find (as highly unlikely as that may be, although it's getting more likely each month) should be reported to [email protected] for a free mention in the newsletter next month.
I want to thank all the participants from the Sparky's Pals Open once again - both those in person and those by proxy.

Summer 2008 promises to be a busy one - I hope to see all of you at one of our events, and I hope you and your pets stay cool!

Sincerely,

Kevin Gilhooly
