| Sparky's Pals Highlights - April 2008 |
|
Greetings!
April was another relatively quiet month for Sparky's Pals, but that's only because many of us spent a lot of time practicing for the 2008 Sparky's Pals Open, which will be May 18 (see below.)
If you haven't pre-registered for the miniature golf tournament already, please let us know if you are planning to attend - just email us at golf@sparkypals.org.
Looking ahead, we'll be presenting for childrean and adults at Petzapalooza at the main branch of the Dallas Public Library in June, and we'll also be presenting at the Girl Scouts IP University again this summer. It's a one-week program to help them complete the Pets Interest Project.
We offer programs for individual troops, so if you know any Scouts who are interested in working on their Pets Badge or Pets Interest Project, we have educational programs to help them! |

May Storytime Schedule
We will host Storytime at Barnes & Noble Prestonwood on Saturday, May 10th and Saturday, May 31st at 10:30am. We will be reading stories and doing crafts in the children's section.
The store is located at Belt Line and Montfort, just east of the Dallas North Tollway.
Storytime on May 10th will focus on Bite Prevention and teach the attendees to "Be A Tree", since Bite Prevention Week is May 18 - 24.

Caring for Pets At Home and in Your Community After our presentation at the end of March, we presented "Caring for Pets at Home and in Your Community" to another set of Girl Scouts in Grand Prairie in April. This is our longest workshop, a series of six presentations in a five-hour, one-day session which covers almost everything required for the Pet Interest Project (five and a half of seven requirements.)
Thanks to Dr. Tiffany Tobaben for assisting us and presenting on how she became a veterinarian. She received rave reviews.
As mentioned above, we will also be presenting this workshop at the Girl Scout IP College this summer. We're happy to present to any Girl Scout troop working on their Pets IP.

How To Meet A Dog
Doogie and Carol Duncan visited our April volunteer meeting and discussed meeting pets safely, and how to approach other's pets. Remember, always ask permission before approaching an unknown pet! If the pet is traveling alone, just ignore it. Be a Tree! We will continue teaching our volunteers how to deal with other's pets, just to make sure that they know how to stay safe around animals.

Oh No! Error Spotted!
Congratulations to Jim Suhler for spotting the error in April's newsletter! He noticed that we incorrectly called the "Dallas North Tollway" the "North Dallas Tollway."
I am very impressed that Jim found the error, since he is an excellent guitarist and he reported the mistake before noon, which is not a time I would expect any working musician to be awake. Good job, Jim!

Spot The Error!
Katie is now the copy-editor for the newsletter, since Murphy managed to let an error through last month (see story at left.) Hopefully, there are no errors this month, since we're running out of copy-editors here at Sparky's Pals. As always, any errors you find (as highly unlikely as that may be) should be reported to kjg@sparkypals.org for a free mention in the newsletter next month.

Did You Know?
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquito bites. Since Texas is warm enough to have mosquitos year-round, your pets should always be on heartworm preventative.
Dogs, cats and ferrets should be on heartworm preventative.

April Showers bring May Storytimes and more Girl Scout presentations. We're also getting ready for the miniature golf tournament. We hope to see everyone at the 2008 Sparky's Pals Open.
Sincerely,
Kevin Gilhooly
