Band Scramble &     Songwriting Contest
at the Comstock Bluegrass Festival

People ask all the time,
"Just what IS a Band Scramble?"
Read on to find out! 
Band Scramble Rules
Earn bragging rights....and prizes, too!
 
1)  You may enter your name in any of the following 5 categories:
     1.  Banjo/Dobro                         
     2.  Fiddle/Mandolin                                  
     3.  Guitar
     4.  Bass
     5.  Miscellaneous (can be ANYTHING -nose flute, kazoo, dancing,singing, hand clapping, etc.) 
 
2) You may enter in as many categories as you like, as many times as you like*.
 
3) Starting at 11:50, every hour, we will draw 1 slip out of each category, to create a "band" with a maximum of 5 members.  
            Band #1 (names drawn at 11:50, performs at 12:50)
            Band #2  (names drawn at 12:50, performs at 1:50)
            Band #3  (names drawn at 1:50, performs at 2:50)
            Band #4  (names drawn at 2:50, performs at 3:50)
            Band #5  (names drawn at 3:50, performs at 4:50)
            NOTE: there is no 4:50 name drawing, because the
                       Songwriters will perform in the 5:50 slot)       
            Band #6  (names drawn at 5:50, performs at 6:50)

 4)  As soon as you hear your name called, you need to immediately assemble behind the bathroom building with the rest of your "band", and put together 2 songs.  Each band MUST include the following in their "show"
                        ~One vocal number
                        ~One instrumental number
                        ~One joke
                        ~A name for the band
 
5)  Each band has a maximum of 8 minutes performance time. 
 
6)  Each band will be scored by the audience using score cards.  You will be judged primarily on your "entertainment value".  At 7pm, we will have an award ceremony where the band with the highest total score wins a prize!  
           
*If you have already performed in a band and your name is drawn a 2nd time, we will draw another name---unless there are no more entries in any other category.
 
Songwriting Contest Rules
You KNOW you've always wanted to write a song!
 
1)  You write a song* which must include at least two of the following "themes":
      ~bluegrass
      ~love or hate
      ~happiness or murder
      ~Virginia City
      ~Nevada
      ~gold or silver
*You may make-up your own "tune" or "melody" or you may swipe the melody of any other song.  Or you can simply read your song aloud as a poem.

2) Place your entry in the jar by 5pm.
 
3)  Be prepared to "perform" your song (or find someone who will perform it for you) at 5:50 pm
        ~All songwriting entries will be performed at 5:50 pm
 
4)  The winner will be announced at 6pm*
  
*An independent panel of judges will score each song for:
            ~originality
            ~rhyme, rhythm, tunefulness
            ~performance
 
 
Bribing the judges is allowed and highly encouraged!
