EATING DISORDERS IN THE NEWS

woman on scale stooping LATEST DIET CRAZE: Starve one day, then pig out the next!

Gorging yourself on as many burgers, chips and cakes as you like one day then eating fewer calories than you find in a cheese sandwich the next might sound like a worrying eating disorder.

But this regime of chomping away to your heart's content one day, and virtually starving yourself the next is the latest diet craze. It's known as 'intermittent fasting' or 'alternate-day dieting',and devotees insist the pounds just drop off.

The diet soared in popularity after featuring in a BBC2 Horizon documentary a few weeks ago by health journalist Dr Michael Mosley. After a month eating normally five days a week and eating just 600 calories the other two days - known as the 5/2 diet - Mosley lost nearly a stone, reduced his body fat by about 25 per cent and improved his blood sugar and cholesterol levels. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS STUDY:  Trouble Seeing Emotions Tied to Eating

Women with abnormal eating behaviors, such as binging or extreme fear of gaining weight, misinterpreted facial expressions in others, especially anger and fear, compared with a control group, researchers report in the journal Appetite. Women with abnormal eating behaviors mistook fear, bottom right, for anger, left, and sadness, top right, in a series of images of emotions, including happiness, top left.

Abnormal eating is associated with poor social skills and an impaired ability to recognize facial emotions. This study is the first to identify a pattern in recognition errors, researchers said.

The subjects were 80 women in their 20s from the U.K., 40 with high scores on an eating disorder inventory that assessed desire for thinness, bulimia and body dissatisfaction, and 40 with low EDI scores. Some high EDI subjects were recruited from a self-help group for people with concerns about their eating patterns, though none had received treatment at the time of the study.   Read More  Read the Abstract

spring baby Study: Effect of Maternal Eating Disorder on Perinatal Outcome Minimal

Pregnant women with current or past eating disorders have few adverse perinatal outcomes, according to a study published online Aug. 20 in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

Nadia Micali, M.D., Ph.D., from the University College London Institute of Child Health, and colleagues examined adverse perinatal outcomes and gestational weight gain trajectories in women with lifetime eating disorders. Women with singleton births were grouped based on lifetime (current or past) exposure: lifetime anorexia nervosa (AN; 129 women); lifetime bulimia nervosa (BN; 209 women); lifetime AN + BN (100 women); other lifetime psychiatric disorders (1,002 women); and unexposed women (3,816 women).Read More
