Study Addresses Obesity and Night Shift Work
In a modern world with 24-hour service becoming increasingly expected from a wide range of businesses around the world, what kind of pressure does this place on people doing shift work when most people are still asleep? In a recent article published in the British Medical Journal, a team of Canadian and Norwegian medical researchers looked at thirty-four previous studies examining the medical and psychological effects of shift work on over two million workers. According to University of Western Ontario researcher D.G. Hackam, one of the authors of the study, "night shift workers are up all the time and they don't have a defined rest period. They are in a state of perpetual nervous system activation which is bad for things like obesity and cholesterol." Read More
Women with Eating Disorders More Likely to be Vegetarian, Study Finds
At various points in my life I've attempted to be a loyal vegetarian. But for whatever reason I could never quite make the commitment, be it my ultimate love for well-seasoned chicken or my lack of ethical reservations concerning animal consumption. My reasons for attempting to go meat-free ranged from health to just trying something new to even shedding a few pounds when I felt meat was packing on unwanted weight. And furthermore, meat-free diets are being linked more often to people who struggle with eating disorders.
The study suggests that women who are suffering from eating disorders are four times more likely to be vegetarian than women without eating disorders. Read More

But is this even important? According to Atkins, the answer is yes.
The food and diet company - founded by Dr. Robert C. Atkins in 1972 - did some research recently to determine how Americans perceived carbohydrates, including how many carbs they were eating throughout the day and how often they considered the contents of their meals. They were hoping to clear up what they're refering to as 'carb confusion.'
The study concluded that Americans typically don't monitor the food on their plates - as shown below - with six in 10 reporting they didn't know how many carbohydrates they eat on a daily basis. Findings revealed that: Read More

Call for Proposals
We are seeking abstracts on inventive treatment modalities for the numerous phases of the eating disordered client's journey-- from denial and resistance to treatment and, ultimately, recovery. The spectrum ranging from disordered eating to life threatening medical complications requires skill and creativity. Treatment providers from all disciplines are challenged to creatively convert ongoing research, brain imaging, and treatment updates into meaningful ED treatment protocols. We are seeking submittals on individual, group, and family work which help clinicians in all treatment settings. Please include an experiential or interactive component in your presentation. Preference will be given to unique presentations offered for the first time.
All abstracts must be submitted online. The call will close at midnight on August 18, 2012. Please read the full call, details on submissions, and submit your abstract online here. If you wish to bookmark the abstract site, it is here. |
