Eating Disorders in the News | |
Media Spotlight on Celebrity Pregnancy Leads to 'Pregorexia' Experts are citing unrealistic media reports of celebrity pregnancies as one of the causes behind a rise in cases of pregnant women with eating disorders.
According to a recent report by the Canadian Press, some women are attempting to remain slim through their pregnancy in order to drop the weight quickly following childbirth. This dangerous practice sometimes referred to as "pregorexia" places both mother and baby at risk for serious complications.
Healthy weight gain throughout pregnancy best for mother and baby. However, unrealistic media images often show celebrities revealing pre-pregnancy bodies with just a baby bump. Women who suffer from eating disorders are especially vulnerable to anxiety associated with any type of weight gain, including that of pregnancy. Perceived social pressure to be thin may force some of these pregnant women to attempt to keep their pre-pregnancy figure by struggling to maintain a "perfect" body shape while their baby is growing inside. Other expectant women may find themselves torn between guilt over gaining weight and anxiety over the impact of their eating disorder on their baby. Read More
Study shows Omega 3 fatty acid supplements not necessary for girls recovering from eating disorders
The way an eating disorder affects a person's body can have long-term implications. "Essential fatty acid status is altered in eating disorders that result in weight loss," said Dr. Swenne. "This is important because deficiencies in polyunsaturated omega-3 essential fatty acids have been implicated in the development of depression and other mental health issues."
A recent study found that they regain healthy levels of an essential type of fat in their body once they regain a healthy amount of weight. The study was authored by Ingemar Swenne, MD, PhD, from Uppsala University Children's Hospital, in Sweden, and Agneta Rosling, MD and PhD candidate, from the Department of Neuroscience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Uppsala University.
Their findings were based on the analysis of red blood cells in 24 teenage girls who had lost an average of 22 pounds from their eating disorders. Read More
Study Shows Eating Disorders Tied to Drug Use, Drinking Adolescent girls with a variety of eating disorders -- even conditions less severe than anorexia or bulimia -- are at risk for obesity and alcohol and drug use, a prospective study found.
Among those who reported binge eating but not purging, the risk for becoming overweight or obese was doubled (OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.04 to 3.48) compared with healthy peers, according to Alison E. Field, ScD, of Harvard University in Boston, and colleagues.

Action figures expose boys to unattainable and unrealistic body images
Men focus on extreme muscularity rather than extreme thinness. Some do SIX hours of exercise EVERY DAY. Intense exercise leads to brittle bones and fractures. Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are often thought to be the preserve of young women.
But some 40 per cent of American teenagers and 25 per cent of all American adults battling such conditions are actually male, according to Harvard research.Therapists have also revealed that more men and boys than ever before are seeking help for issues with weight and self-esteem - and that children's action figures are to blame. Call for Proposals
We are seeking abstracts on inventive treatment modalities for the numerous phases of the eating disordered client's journey-- from denial and resistance to treatment and, ultimately, recovery. The spectrum ranging from disordered eating to life threatening medical complications requires skill and creativity. Treatment providers from all disciplines are challenged to creatively convert ongoing research, brain imaging, and treatment updates into meaningful ED treatment protocols. We are seeking submittals on individual, group, and family work which help clinicians in all treatment settings. Please include an experiential or interactive component in your presentation. Preference will be given to unique presentations offered for the first time.
All abstracts must be submitted online. The call will close at midnight on August 18, 2012. Please read the full call, details on submissions, and submit your abstract online here. If you wish to bookmark the abstract site, it is here. |
