Ninth Circuit Issues Final Ruling That Requires Health Plans to Cover Residential Treatment for Eating Disorders: Blue Shield's Second Rehearing Request Denied Along With Plea for Rehearing En Banc

LOS ANGELES, July 12, 2012-- Kantor & Kantor, LLP announced today that the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied an insurer's second request for rehearing of a significant decision in favor of people suffering from nine enumerated mental health conditions - eating disorders in particular. The Court confirmed its June 4, 2012, decision that the California Mental Health Parity Act requires health plans to provide coverage of "all medically necessary treatment" for "severe mental illnesses" under "the same financial terms as those applied to physical illnesses." In that decision, Harlick v. Blue Shield of California... Read More

Girl in MirrorThe Quebec Charter for a Healthy and Diverse Body Image

Two and a half years later: study shows it is shaping public perception

MONTREAL, July 5, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Two and half years since the launch of the groundbreaking Quebec Charter for a Healthy and Diverse Body Image (also known as La Charte quebecoise pour une image corporelle saine et diversifie, or "La Chic" for short), a new study has been released on how the Charter has affected public awareness of the media's impact on eating disorders. Published in print in the August issue of the American Journal of Public Health (and now available in advanced e-publication), this study by Lise Gauvin (Professor in the Department of Social & Preventive Medicine at Universit de Montral and Researcher at the Centre de recherch du CHUM) and Howard Steiger (Chief of the Eating Disorders Program at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute) shines a light on how this initiative is shaping public perception.

Reversing the rising tide of eating disorders is a public health priority. Although many public health actions try to help people reduce the amount of food they eat and make better food choices, some researchers believe that these actions neglect the unhealthy pursuit of thinness and its corresponding unhealthy weight-control practices. The authors also found evidence in the literature indicating that greater exposure to images that promote excessively thin body ideals can lead to maladaptive weight-control practices and disordered eating, especially among teen girls.  Read More

omg diet OMG Diet Tops Bestseller List, but Could it Trigger Eating Disorder Epidemic?

A self-published ebook called Six Week to OMG: Get Skinner Than All Your Friends has become the top of the bestseller list and also gave the author a seven-figure book deal.

The book is written by a British sports scientist and celebrity personal trainer who goes by the pen name of Venice A Fulton and real name Paul Khanna. The author claims to use a mix of nutrition, biochemistry, genetics and psychology to help readers lose 20 pounds of body fat and reduce cellulite.

Problem is, the OMG Diet seems to be a trend among teens and could trigger an epidemic of eating disorders. Psychologist Deanne Jade, of the National Center for Eating Disorders said, "Teenagers will try anything. They'll sit in a cold bath for hours. This diet uses psychology against vulnerable young people and will encourage unhealthy competition to lose weight."

Call for Proposals

We are seeking abstracts on inventive treatment modalities for the numerous phases of the eating disordered client's journey-- from denial and resistance to treatment and, ultimately, recovery. The spectrum ranging from disordered eating to life threatening medical complications requires skill and creativity. Treatment providers from all disciplines are challenged to creatively convert ongoing research, brain imaging, and treatment updates into meaningful ED treatment protocols. We are seeking submittals on individual, group, and family work which help clinicians in all treatment settings. Please include an experiential or interactive component in your presentation. Preference will be given to unique presentations offered for the first time.

All abstracts must be submitted online. The call will close at midnight on August 18, 2012.  Please read the full call, details on submissions, and submit your abstract online here.  If you wish to bookmark the abstract site, it is here.
