beer bellyStem cell research: UConn professor tracks cause of rare, genetic eating disorder

Like a code breaker, researcher Stormy Chamberlain is trying to find identification marks and figure out which is the "on" switch in a set of genes.

If she can solve the puzzle, she hopes to correct a rare, genetic disease that causes a person to have an insatiable appetite, often leading to obesity. Her work could not only lead to treatment of Prader-Willi Syndrome, but could shed light on what drives us to eat.

Chamberlain, an assistant professor of genetics and developmental biology at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, is investigating the markers on the chromosomes to try to find those that turn on and off the genes.  Read More

brainscan2Binge eating improves with deep brain stimulation surgery

Deep brain stimulation reduces binge eating in mice, suggesting that this surgery, which is approved for treatment of certain neurologic and psychiatric disorders, may also be an effective therapy for obesity. Presentation of the results will take place Sunday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"Doing brain surgery for obesity treatment is a controversial idea," said the study's presenting author, Casey Halpern, MD, a fifth-year neurosurgery resident physician at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. "However, binge eating is a common feature of obese patients that frequently is associated with suboptimal treatment outcomes."

Currently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved deep brain stimulation for use in various conditions that affect the brain, including Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. The procedure does not destroy any part of the brain and typically does not cause pain, Halpern said.  Read More

anorexic teen girlResilience and Eating Disorders

Like many other psychoanalysts, I can sometimes get so caught up in looking at what went wrong in a client's childhood that I miss evidence that many things went right. Yet what went right is very important. The good things in a client's life are often the very things that help them get better intherapy. And oddly enough, they can also be the reason that some clients don't want to get better! It therefore behooves us therapists to pay close attention to the positive, adaptive or resilient aspects of even the most painful symptoms.

Here's how this can work:

Jocelyn* was nineteen when she came to see me. It was the beginning of her sophomore year of college. During her freshman year she had lost a significant amount of weight, and her parents were afraid that she was becoming anorexic. They had both been in therapy themselves and found it very helpful. They thought it would be a good idea for Jocelyn, too. Jocelyn was not so sure.  Read More

Innovative Approaches to Treatment

March 21-24, 2013

The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa

Call for Proposals

We are seeking abstracts on inventive treatment modalities for the numerous phases of the eating disordered client's journey-- from denial and resistance to treatment and, ultimately, recovery. The spectrum ranging from disordered eating to life threatening medical complications requires skill and creativity. Treatment providers from all disciplines are challenged to creatively convert ongoing research, brain imaging, and treatment updates into meaningful ED treatment protocols. We are seeking submittals on individual, group, and family work which help clinicians in all treatment settings. Please include an experiential or interactive component in your presentation. Preference will be given to unique presentations offered for the first time.

All abstracts must be submitted online. The call will close at midnight on August 18, 2012.  Please read the full call, details on submissions, and submit your abstract online here.  If you wish to bookmark the abstract site, it is here.
