Older Women and Eating Disorders Study

A first-of-a-kind study looking at older women finds damaging eating disorders are common - and 62% of those surveyed say their weight or shape has a negative impact on their lives.

Historically, eating disorder research has focused on teens and young women, but the study out Thursday in the International Journal of Eating Disorders shows 13% of women ages 50 and older struggle with the problem - some for the first time in their lives. Eating disorders are more common in women than men and include purging, binge eating, excessive dieting and excessive exercising.

The researchers surveyed 1,849 women online from across the nation in attempt to find out how older women feel about their bodies and to estimate the prevalence of eating disorders. There are 53 million women in the USA older than age 50, the authors write, noting previous studies have reported a lower risk for eating disorders as women mature.  Read More

Role of Cellular Protein Demonstrated in Regulation of Binge Eating

binge eating pictureScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) - Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have demonstrated in experimental models that blocking the Sigma-1 receptor, a cellular protein, reduced binge eating and caused binge eaters to eat more slowly.

The research, which is published online in Neuropsychopharmacology, was led by Pietro Cottone, PhD, and Valentina Sabino, PhD, both assistant professors in the pharmacology and psychiatry departments at BUSM.

Binge eating disorder, which affects approximately 15 million Americans, is believed to be the eating disorder that most closely resembles substance dependence.  Read More

Call for Proposals

We are seeking abstracts on inventive treatment modalities for the numerous phases of the eating disordered client's journey-- from denial and resistance to treatment and, ultimately, recovery. The spectrum ranging from disordered eating to life threatening medical complications requires skill and creativity. Treatment providers from all disciplines are challenged to creatively convert ongoing research, brain imaging, and treatment updates into meaningful ED treatment protocols. We are seeking submittals on individual, group, and family work which help clinicians in all treatment settings. Please include an experiential or interactive component in your presentation. Preference will be given to unique presentations offered for the first time.

All abstracts must be submitted online. The call will close at midnight on June 30, 2012.  Please read the full call, details on submissions, and submit your abstract online here.  If you wish to bookmark the abstract site, it is here.
