Study: BEER BELLY IS BIGGEST BODY ISSUE FOR MEN New research shows that men have serious issues and that talking about your body is no longer confined to women. A major national study examining British men's attitudes to their appearance reveals that over four in five (80.7%) men regularly engage in conversation about one another's body and that most are unhappy with their muscularity. The study found that men talk most about their unhappiness with their stomach, refered to most commonly as their beer belly. The study, a collaboration between experts at the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at UWE Bristol, The Succeed Foundation and Central YMCA, also revealed that more than 35% of men would sacrifice a year of life to achieve their ideal body weight or shape. The majority of men surveyed were unhappy with their level of muscularity - most didn't think their arms (62.8%) or chests (62.9%) were muscular enough. Read More

India: Plump Can Be Sexy Size zero is boring! Vidya Balan recently declared, before she proudly flaunted her plus- size in The Dirty Picture. We can laud her for reminding us that plump women can be sexy after all. She is the first actress in the size zero era to make this statement, years after Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Vyjayantimala, Zeenat Aman, and Sridevi graced the screen with their shapely curves. They were all women happy in their voluptuousness. But then Kareena Kapoor stepped into the picture and made size zero fashionable, fuelling the craze for thinness already set in motion by the ' model- culture.' The rise in eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia among young Indian women is an indication of the pervasiveness of this influence. Read More
UCSF Study Challenges Thinking on Anorexia
The standard approach to refeeding patients with anorexia nervosa -- starting with a relatively low number of calories and increasingly them very slowly -- is being challenged by new research from UCSF. Researchers have found this conservative approach, based on the long-held notion that refeeding malnourished patients too quickly can result in potentially fatal metabolic disturbances, fails to produce significant weight gain in the first week of hospitalization and can result in longer hospital stays. Eating Disorders Legal Advocacy Forum in the News | |
As a followup to the meeting held at Symposium 2011 regarding reimbursement for eating disorders treatment, the Eating Disorders Legal Advocacy Forum was developed.
The purpose of this Forum is to provide awareness, training, and tools for providers to facilitate their patients' timely access to insurance benefits so as to prevent early discharge and promote lasting recovery. As a provider who agrees to participate in this Forum, you have demonstrated your commitment to:
- Best practices in communicating with insurance plans.
- Aggressively pursuing the submission of claims and appeals.
- Advocating for the length of stay which, in your opinion, is appropriate under the guidelines set by the American Psychiatric Association.

Why is certification important? As a clinician, you have already invested in a quality education. You may have already spent years in the eating disorders treatment field or you may be fairly new to the field. Why in addition to your current credentials and licensing, would you need certification? It's a good question which is probably best answered by looking at the reasons others become certified.
- Dedicated to providing quality care to patients
- Committed to the field of eating disorders and continuing education
- Understand the complexity of eating disorders treatment and the confusion many patients and their families experience when choosing a treatment provider
- Want a prospective patient to be confident in their professional competence because they know it will enhance the treatment process
- Demonstrate their clinical expertise through education, experience and a rigorous examination
- Recognized as leaders in the field of eating disorders treatment
- Seek an affiliation within a community of professionals
Current certifications include Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS); Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian (CEDRD); and CEDS/CEDRD Equivalency Certification.
Recognizing the need for specialized requirements for our International members, a CEDS Checklist for International applicants is available here. All CEDS and CEDRD professionals are eligible and encouraged to apply for the iaedp Approved Supervisor designation. We are currently waiving the previously required two-year wait period following receipt of the CEDS/CEDRD designation. Read about becoming an iaedp Approved Supervisor here. |
