Hello ,
Welcome to the April newsletter. We hope you all are experiencing the beautiful spring weather as we are down here in Southeast, Georgia. With this great weather, we are eagerly springing into action and reaching out to small businesses about providing health insurance for their employees.
Stewart's Insurance Depot specializes in providing small businesses (employee size 2-25) with a group health plan. This is a great benefit you can offer to your employees (and possibly help bring in new ones) to ensure that their major medical needs are covered. With the help of Humana or UnitedHealthcare, we can find he right group health plan that fits both your budget and your employees health needs. Humana and UnitedHealthcare offer anywhere from basic and more traditional coverage plans to consumer-driven health plans.
We encourage you to read the rest of the newsletter for an in-depth look at the changing direction of major medical insurance and how your business can take advantage of it. We further discuss Health Savings Account/High Deductible Plans and how they are becoming a more popular choice in coverage.
We wish you much success and joy this month and a Happy Easter to you all!

The Changing Direction of Major Medical Insurance | |
The Internet, Apps, more powerful mobile and standard computers are all playing an ever changing role in how we stay connected as well as how we do business. The technology explosion over the past decade and how we use these new devices has greatly impacted the way we pay bills, listen to and watch streaming video, and how we get the news. The next question is how we investigate and purchase insurance.
Just ten years ago, the majority of Americans received their health insurance as an example from their employers. This may have also included their term life and other insurance products. Life was simple; your employer took care of all the details. Unfortunately in today's ever changing economy the degree of certainty that the status quo will not change has been completely smashed. There have been factors shifting the market and these are:
- State and Federal mandates have driven the cost of employer plans higher. This coupled with the migration of employees to the individual market has reduced the number of employer driven plans.
- It use to be that employees would stay with an employer their entire working career. Therefore the need for portability in major medical plans was no included in the model. Today, Americans change jobs more than eleven times in a lifetime and less than half of small business employers offer employee sponsored coverage.
- The technology of today make it far easier for employees to purchase affordable coverage.
- The desire to choose a carrier, plan design, and premium helps the individual families get the most coverage for the dollar they spend.
- The defined contribution cafeteria plan platform which allows employees to purchase their major medical insurance plan tax free-- putting it on an even, tax exempt status field as employer sponsored major medical plans.
Regarding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is allowed to stay in force, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the purchase of individual/family major medical plans will double over the next five years. Unfortunately with government projections, this estimate will be low. This act by 2014 encourages individuals and families to purchase their insurance on their own and discourages employers from offering group coverage. This will include the state exchanges and government subsidies for premiums based on income. It also makes it an easy decision by the employers to pay a penalty and let their employees look at the state exchanges and personal health plan market for coverage. If PPACA is found unconstitutional or is repealed by the congress, then the employer model will shift to the individual market in the form of defined contribution plans with refundable tax credits following what the Republicans are suggesting. Other proposal have indicated a similar theme for Medicare and Medicaid reform. The question is which way will the wind blow? The best approach would be to keep a free market platform which allows the employees and employer the right to choose the best method of providing insurance. This will produce more competition among insurance companies. The reinforcing of the state risk pools for preexisting conditions will also provide a stronger safety net. The bottom line to all of this is that changes are coming. If they are done correctly, the major medical market will improve even more on the affordability and quality of the insurance provided without creating additional burdens on the state and federal budgets. |

Consumer-Driven Health Plans |
Consumer-driven health plans (CDHP) are how we better handle the cost of healthcare when we need it. Instead of saying "whatever it takes just fix me" approach, this concept improves the consumer's awareness of cost to recover. Some of the features are basically simple to use. We ask the price of major purchases like homes, cars, boats...etc., yet when it comes to major medical we forget our consumerism. This is why we suggest doing a little research not only on the illness, but also on where you can get the best dollar value for the procedure. To become more aware and informed as a consumer, consider asking some questions like these:
Is outpatient surgery better than hospitalization?
What kind of medications do I need and are there generics available?
What pharmacy has the best prices on prescriptions? Should I use mail order?

Health Savings Account/High Deductible Plans |
When shopping for major medical insurance for your company (or for your family), one specific plan we suggest is a Health Savings Account/High Deductible Plan (HSA/HDP). With this type of plan, employees can optimize healthcare benefit dollars by purchasing a plan that balances cost, quality and access. Employers are more involved with a HSA/HDP.
Some of the benefits of an HSA/HDP are:
- At the end of the year, leftover money in an HSA continues to grow into the next year (unlike a Flex-Spending Account, FSA).
- You now have a tax-free source for paying for medical services and prescription drugs.
- The health savings account can be used for dental, vision, orthodontics, Lasik and chiropractic services.
- The account is willable to your estate.

Are you starting to make your travel plans this year?
Will you be leaving the country?
International Medical Insurance works just like what you are used to in the states. Having to need the services of medical professionals in a foreign country leaves a lot of concerns. With International Medical Insurance, as we provide from IMG, the worries are laid aside. IMG has offices in their countries they serve and they make sure that the medical staffs they recommend are just like the ones we use in this country. You have the benefit of good service which will help speed up your recovery. They also offer medical lift services back to your friendly USA surrounds.
Mrs. Stewart and I will be using IMG for our vacation this summer and we hope you do the same.
