Parish Gathers Together to Celebrate Mother Taylor's Little One
On Saturday, September 22, many parishioners came together to celebrate the impending arrival of Mother Stefanie Taylor's little boy, Mattis.  Food, gifts, and cake were just a few of the ways we showed how much we share in the joy of the newest member of our St. John's clergy as she gets ready to become a mother.  Since her title says differently, though, perhaps it's best to say that she is already a "Mother," but now she will be a  "mommy!"

Stefanie and her husband Arthur wrote after the event: "Thank you to everyone who attended the baby shower.  We feel truly blessed to be part of such a loving and supportive community. We had so much fun and we are now well prepared to welcome our son into the world. This community has definitely been the hands and feet of Christ to our growing family and we could not be more pleased to start our family amongst such warmth."

Wednesday Nights at St. John's

This week, the Wednesday night group continues a three-part DVD series titled The Story Of Anglicanism.  The roots of the Anglican tradition are traced from ancient and medieval foundations, through the Reformation and its consequences, with implications for creating a global family.   Part I: Ancient and Medieval Foundations - The roots of our tradition are traced in the evolution and mission and ministry of the pre-Reformation English Church.  Part II: Reformation and Its Consequences - Henry VIII's often misunderstood break with papal authority initiates the shaping of classical Anglicanism.  Part III: Creating a Global Family - The Anglican genius for adaptation is seen in its response to the modern world and its evolution into a worldwide communion.

Bring your covered dish, favorite study Bible, and an open heart and mind for wonderful fellowship and stimulating conversation.  For further information email Winkie or Paul Game at [email protected].

The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels

Feast Day Facts:  St. Michael and All Angels
The scriptural word "angel"
(Greek: angelos) means, literally, a messenger.  Messengers from God can be visible or invisible, and may assume human or non-human forms.  Christians have always felt themselves to be attended by healthful spirits - swift, powerful, and enlightening.  Those beneficent spirits are often depicted in Christian art in human form, with wings to signify their swiftness and spacelessness, with swords to signify their power, and with dazzling raiment to signify their ability to enlighten.  Unfortunately, this type of pictorial has led many to dismiss the angels as "just another mythical beast, like the  unicorn, the griffin, or the sphinx."

Of the many angels spoken of in the Bible, only four are called by name: Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael.  The Archangel Michael is the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God's people, and delivers peace to them at the end of this life's mortal struggle.  Michael (Arabic: ميخائيل, Mikhail ميكائيل, Mikael ), is one of the two archangels mentioned in the Qur'an, alongside Jibreel (Gabriel).

"Michaelmas," as his feast is called in England, has long been one of
the popular celebrations of the Christian year in many parts of the world.  Old Michaelmas Day falls on October 11 (October 10 according to some sources).  According to an old legend, blackberries should not be picked after this date.  This is because Satan was banished from Heaven on this day by St. Michael, fell into a blackberry bush, and cursed the brambles as he fell into them, or so the folklore goes.

Our many St. John's attorneys may remember that Michaelmas is also the name of the first of four terms into which the legal year is divided by the courts of Wales and England.  The U.S. Supreme Court follows this tradition (though not by name) by convening each new term the first Monday in October, which is shortly after Michaelmas.

We will celebrate Michaelmas at St. John's with the usual 12:15 p.m. Eucharist in the chapel, as we do on all holy days, as well as with our Centennial Celebration on the evening of Saturday the 29th.
