This Episcopal Schools Sunday is part of the celebration of over 1,200 Episcopal schools worldwide.

Introducing Club 45
- Leland Balwin

Who makes up this club?
4th and 5th grade children comprise the membership of this awesome TWEEN CLUB

Why do we need this CLUB?
At this age children are beginning to spread their wings and often feel too old to be in the classic Sunday School setting, but they still are too young to be in Youth group

This is our way of:

  • keeping their interests stimulated
  • giving them their own sense of community
  • respecting the changes they are going through

Benefits will include:

  • Monthly socials
  • T-shirts
  • Leadership during Children's Chapel, and other various arenas throughout the year, such as Angel Tree, and Shrove Tuesday supper
In short, this group will be prepared to enter Youth Group and feel good about it, and the 2nd and 3rd grade group have something to look forward to.

For more information contact [email protected].

If you would like to be included in next week's Scroll please email all content to Lionel Lowry at [email protected]  .

Contemporary Women's Bible Study

BibleCWBS meets in the Peterson Room at the Plant Avenue Campus (St. John's Middle School).

The fall session of the Contemporary Women's Bible Study (CWBS) begins on Tuesday, September 27th with the Gospel of John. After the first of the year, we will be studying the book of Isaiah. Although we will be using the Interpretation Bible Studies series, we will be reading all of the chapters, not just those covered in the study guides.

All women of St. John's (and their friends) are invited to join this dynamic group for prayer, lively discussion, faith and fellowship. After a light breakfast, scripture and selected topics of interest are explored in new and creative ways, led by rotating facilitators.  Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, appreciate the big picture or delight in detail, this fresh approach to Bible study offers interesting and inspiring insights for everyone as we ponder its meaning for our lives.

If you are new to CWBS and do not have an entry code for the Middle School, contact Kathleen Moore at 813-221-6253 or [email protected].  We will need to make arrangements for someone to meet you and show you how to get into the building.

The Screwtape Letters

Adult Education Parishwide Event  (Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Ferguson Hall)

The Screwtape Letters theatrical production is presented by the Fellowship for the Performing Arts whose mission is to produce theater from a Christian worldview that is engaging to a diverse audience. One of the great blessings of this play is how it opens up questions of faith that are often difficult to bring up in ordinary conversation.

The Screwtape Letters is a wonderful place to awaken Christian ideas in a safe, neutral environment. We would love for you to experience the unique way in which Fellowship for the Performing Arts carries out its ministry. Contact Leland Baldwin if you are interested at [email protected]. The more people we have going, the more the tickets will be reduced in price. We could all eat together at the Fly, Harry and Gwen Hedge's daughter's restaurant, beforehand.

Next event - October 9 at 4 p.m. at Jackson's Bistro on Harbour Island

Come watch the Bucs vs. the 49'ers at Jackson's Bistro as we grow our new group, the Orleanians!  The St. John's nursery will be open for childcare during this event.

The Orleanians, St. John's newest group, seeks to build upon our community aspect of St. John's for the youngish generation in their twenties and thirties.  Providing an avenue for parishioners to get to know each other better, The Orleanians will grow into a network of friends to compliment the overall long-term experience at St. John's.  Low-key get-togethers, with a mix of adult events and kid friendly events, are held every other month.

Contacts are Dax Nelson at 494.0125 or [email protected] and Mother Stefanie Taylor at [email protected] or 917-921-6434.

Request

Special Request From Bishop Masereka Christian Foundation:

One of the students that members of St. John's have sponsored in the past has now graduated from Secondary School and has been accepted into a 2-1/2 year nursing program that starts in November, but he will not be able to attend unless someone (or some group of people) are willing to sponsor him for the two and a half years.  The student's name is Morris Bwambale.  He has been living with his grandmother, who is so poor she cannot possibly do anything to help him.  Last year his sponsor paid extra to buy kerosene for the grandmother so she could cook and have light for Morris to study.

  • The nursing program where Morris has been accepted costs $1350.00 per year.  This includes housing and meals.
  • It takes two and a half years to complete this nursing course.
  • The school is two hours away from where Morris lives, so he would have to live away from his grandmother during that time.  He would return to Kasese during semester breaks to be with her.
  • There is an additional one-time fee of $400.00 to pay for a stethoscope, uniforms, and other supplies needed by a nursing student.

If there is anyone who is willing to take on this two-and-a-half year commitment, please contact Peggy Curlin at  [email protected].  I am hoping that some small group at St. John's - or someone's place of work, or a civic club - will be able to pool their resources and help this young man get the training that will enable him to support himself and his grandmother, and that will also allow him to be of service to the people of Uganda.
