I'm never quite sure what to expect when I walk into an interview. The goal with my Leadership Unleashed column in the Telegraph Journal is to do informative interviews with a variety of leaders that highlight their accomplishments, share their insights into leadership and also give the reader a sense of what inspires them.
All the leaders I have interviewed have been unique, intriguing and
Stephen M.R. Covey ~ Author & compelling keynote speaker and advisor on trust, leadership, ethics, and high performance
surprisingly open to sharing their wisdom, which is what has made the column such a passion project for me over the last two years.
What made my interview with Stephen M.R. Covey different was that I was coming into the interview having read his best selling book The SPEED of Trust a number of times.
The topic of trust is something that comes up again and again with clients and I often refer to Covey's work in this area.
In preparation for my interview, I watched a previous interview that Stephen gave on CNN...I can report that this was not an activity that calmed me down. Instead, I found myself wondering how relevant my questions were and doubting my ability to meet my goals for the column. You have to love 'self-doubt' - it does wonders for your confidence! In the spirit of full disclosure, I also had a concern that the author of one of my favourite books - with such an important message - wouldn't live up to his very important message. Would he extend trust to me?
So, I thought I'd share a behind-the-scenes look at my recent interview with Stephen. Read it here.
And, you can read the full interview and watch a short video of my interview with Stephen M.R. Covey as it appeared in the Telegraph Journal in May.
I want to add a big thanks to the UNB College of Extended Learning Executive Education Centre, who hosted Stephen M.R. Covey a few weeks ago, giving me the opportunity to interview him. They will be hosting a Fall Seminar, FranklinCovey's Leading at the Speed of Trust on September 20th.
