7 Key Principles to Build Reciprocal Relationships
handshake

According to Peak Experiences - The Learning Company, working relationships have much in common with the relationships we try to build in our personal lives.  For example, think of how you behave (or once behaved) in trying to build a relationship with your romantic partner.

To build a strong relationship, you try to be understanding, thoughtful, considerate, sensitive to feelings, and supportive. All of these adjectives apply equally well to what is needed to build a strong working relationship.

Fortunately, there are some key principles of building reciprocal relationships that apply in both personal and professional life.

Fresh Ideas December 2007
Greetings!

The Vision Coaching coaches have been very busy, both professionally and personally. I just returned from Long Beach California where I combined business with pleasure - I attended the International Coach Federation (ICF) Annual Conference and was able to spend the balance of the week vacationing with my wife and 14-month old son. At the conference, it was pretty exciting to have an opportunity to hear two thought leaders in the coaching world speak; David Rock (author of Quiet Leadership) and Sir John Whitmore (creator of the G.R.O.W. Model).

David Rock shared fascinating data that helped me understand why coaching works, in a scientific way, by demonstrating what happens cognitively when someone is being coached. Sir John Whitmore, Britain's Number One Business Coach, was honoured with the President's Award at the conference, in recognition of the work he is doing to promote coaching in a Sir John Whitmore receives an awardhumanitarian capacity. (pictured, right) And, even more exciting, we captured some terrific film footage of Sir John for the coaching documentary we have in the works.

And speaking of inspirational people, our very own Marilyn Singh reached an incredible personal milestone last month. After over a year of dedicated training, she not only entered a body building competition for the very first time in her life, she placed 2nd! See her "before" and "after" pictures below!

As always, we love hearing from you and look forward to your feedback and contributions to Fresh Ideas! We've added a "What Do You Think" button in Fresh Ideas - please take a few seconds, answer our question and ask a question, if you have one! We'll share responses in future issues.

Mighty Marilyn!

Marilyn Before

Marilyn Singh, one of Vision Coaching's coaches, reached an incredible personal milestone last month. After more than a year of dedicated training, she not only entered a body building competition ACOA logofor the very first time in her life; she placed 2nd, with her family and friends there to cheer her on as she flexed and posed in a very close contest! What a feat!

Yes, coaching did play a very large role in this accomplishment - Marilyn has been training under the watchful eye of a personal trainer, John MacKenney (Fusion Health & Wellness). The results of Marilyn's hard work and dedication to her sport speak for themselves.  We are very proud of this tremendous accomplishment. What's next Marilyn? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

Resonant LeadershipTitle: Resonant Leadership
Renewing Yourself and Connecting with Others Through Mindfulness, Hope, and Compassion

Authors: Richard Boyatzis and

Annie McKee

Review by: Blair Northcott, Partner, Grant Thornton

This book makes it very clear that without "being aware", your leadership role comes with "power stress".  This stress can sneak up on you, over months or years,  and create dissonance that often only comes to your attention through an unpleasant "wake-up call", either at work or at home.
