Parkway Celebrates 75th at Festival Sept 10-12

If you're looking for some free family fun the weekend of September 10, 11, and 12, pack up the car and head to the Blue Ridge Music Center (milepost 213) and the Cumberland Knob Recreation Area (milepost 217) for the Blue Ridge Parkway's 75th Anniversary Festival. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 10, and conclude mid-afternoon on Sunday, September 12.

In addition to craft demonstrations, kids activities, nature walks, panel discussions, storytelling, and plays, there will be music, music, and more music, including:

Register NOW! Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment is partnering with the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway to host at The Hotel Roanoke Oct 14-16 a symposium open to all citizens. It is especially geared for persons who live near or do business with the Parkway, tourism and community development leaders, planning and government officials, teachers and students, and Parkway supporters.

In addition to a number of noted local and regional speakers, including Carlton Abbott, son of original Parkway designer Stanley Abbott, there will be several national keynoters:

Roanoke County Project Recognized by VACo
 
Congratulations go out to Roanoke County's Economic Development Department for receiving a 2010 Achievement Award from the Virginia Association of Counties. The department received the award in the Community/Economic Development Category for its submission: "The Green Ridge Recreation Center - An Innovative Public/Private Partnership." 
 
The submission described Green Ridge as a one-of-a-kind facility that was strategically positioned as a catalyst for new economic development opportunities and currently serves a large number of businesses, citizens, and high-profile corporations in Roanoke County and throughout the Roanoke Valley.
Academy Graduates New Law Enforcement Officers

The Roanoke County Criminal Justice Academy graduated nine new law enforcement officers at a ceremony on Friday, August 27, 2010, including two new officers for Blacksburg. The Academy consists of 22 weeks of training. Roanoke County officers undergo three months of field training and three months on each shift before receiving final shift assignments. Congratulations, graduates!

  2. Cook your dinner, not your kitchen. Cover a grease fire, don't use water!
  3. Sprinklers are great "roommates."
  4. Smoke alarms - get one!

  6. Use a power strip - don't overload
  7. Know two ways out, wherever you are
  8. Know how to activate the fire alarm
  9. Know what to do when the fire alarm sounds
  10. Get out and stay out whenever the alarm sounds

Roundabout Opened

Crews worked this summer to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Meadowlark and Merriman roads as part of traffic improvements to Merriman Road and the construction of an entrance to what will be the new South County Library. The improvements have been completed and the roundabout is now open.
CDA Approved

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 24, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to approve an ordinance authorizing the creation of a Community Development Authority (CDA) for the South Peak project.
