How Important is Ball Security in Youth Football?

Written by Dave Cisar- Winning Youth Football - on February 8th, 2011

How Important Are Turnovers in Youth Football?

In the 2011 Super Bowl, the Pittsburgh Steelers probably lost the game due to turnovers. In the history of the Super Bowl the team that has won the turnover battle has won 33 and lost 3 of those games. Important in the NFL? Yes, but how important are turnovers in the youth game? The answer is just, if not more. The reason turnovers may be even more important is the fact that there far fewer possessions in a youth football game. Most youth football games have just 10 minute quarters, while College and NFL games have 15 minute quarters. In youth football there are many more running plays compared to the prevalence of passing you see in the NFL and College games which also brings  the number of possessions down. Most youth team huddle and do not run plays at the same pace as most NFL and College teams, which means even fewer plays. Starting to understand why you have to make every possession count in youth football?

More on protecting the ball and ball hawking in future posts. We place a premium on protecting the football in my program. In 2005 we had just 2 turnovers in a 11 game season, in 2006 just 4 in 11 games. In 2007 just 4 in 11 games. This past season we had an inordinately high number of 6 in 12 games, but we did throw a little bit more, getting 18 touchdown passes to go along with the 3 interceptions. Ball security is key and has played a major role in the success of most championship level youth football teams.

Using ESPN Posters to Boost Registrations.

In case you missed this letter that was emailed out in January. Here is a neat way to create buzz and boost the league's registrations.

YFBCA has teamed with MY ESPN Highlights allowing its coaches and players to create FREE ESPN posters this past year.

One league's board member took it a step further and purchased 6 copies of the GINORMOUS poster using the YFBCA code.

(Each
Large Ginormous Poster (24" X 36") poster cost, $13.99)

The league took a high resolution action photo of their football teams and cheer teams.ESPN Poster in Pizza Shop After uploading to the MY ESPN Highlight website, they added the league name, website and phone # to the poster.

The GINORMOUS poster was hung in key places around town such as pizza shops, sports store, YMCA etc.

These posters generated a nice buzz and made the league look larger than life with the feel of ESPN.

The hits on the website and phone calls lead to a nice increase in registrations for the season.ESPN Poster in Pizza Shop2

Implement this idea to boost your 2011 registrations over the next few months.
Create your MY ESPN posters today!

YFBCA is now setting up leagues to earn 20% cash back on all MY ESPN Products ordered throughout the year!

Energy drinks may pose a risk for serious adverse health effects in some children, especially those with diabetes, seizures, cardiac abnormalities or mood and behavior disorders, says a new study in the March 2011 issue of Pediatrics. Reviewing data gleaned from a meta-search of the medical literature via PubMed (an online data base of medical journals) and print and trade media via Google, researchers at the University of Miami conclude that energy drinks have no therapeutic benefit to children, and both the known and unknown properties of the ingredients, combined with reports of toxicity, may put some children at risk for adverse health events. mom's team

3 ways to involve injured players in a youth football practice.

Written by Coach Bouffard- YFBCA- As seen on Yahoo Sports

The game of youth football naturally brings some bumps and bruises. Most teams will be faced with twisted ankles and sprained wrists. Pending the level of injury, many players will still be at practice but on the sidelines and often distracted.

Here are a couple of simple methods to engage the injured players during practice.

1. During various position drills, find a way for them to be your assistant coach by setting up cones, bags or equipment. They can shag football balls and hold hand shields allowing the coach to focus on teaching the skill.

2. During team period have an injured player spot the ball. Place the football on the right hash, then middle of the field, then left hash. This will give the team a game- like feel by having to practice plays to the open field or into the sideline also known as the boundary.

3. Use injured players as a chain crew. Regardless of offense or defense emphasis during practice use a chain crew to reinforce ball movement on each play. The concept of football is either to get first downs on offense or stop first downs on defense. What better way to show positive play by your players than using landmarks (chain crew). For example, "Offense, it's 2nd down and 7 yards to go. Charlie is the first down marker. Let's execute our play to reach Charlie!"

Incorporating your injured players into practice will keep them focused and less likely to be a distraction to the other players. Most importantly, it keeps them involved with the team and continues their learning of the game of football.

Still Plenty of Coaching Clinic to Attend Over Next Few Months!

There are hundreds of great clinics in 2011 to attend and develop your ability to coach.

We ask our players to workout and become better in the off-season. We, as coaches, must do the same by developing our teaching techniques.
