Establishing A Good Relationship Between Coach and Parent

One of the most important and challenging relationships facing youth football coaches today is that which exists between coach and parent. If it is a poor relationship, it can present many problems and an atmosphere of tension. This, in turn, may create an unpleasant environment for the coach, parent, and most importantly, the athlete.
If the coach can develop a good working relationship with the parent, many of the problems can be avoided and the entire experience will be rewarding and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Here are a couple key points:
1. Help parents understand the rules of the game- have a clinic or handout that explain how the game is played.

2. Make sure parents understand how each equipment piece works to protect the players. This can be done by having a player demo where the gear is worn and what it protects.

3. Communicate any and all medical and emergency plans with each parent.
Understand any potential issues with a player

4. Have the player's set goal for themselves and the team. This will give you and the parents a solid understanding of what the player wants.

5. Understand the expectation the parent's have of their child's participation on the team. Having an understanding of the parents goals for their child, we help coaches communicate and motivate the player stronger.

6. Be in constant communication. Email and calendars on websites can help communicate daily and seasonal schedule changes to all the members of the team.

7. Some league require the parents and players to sign s code of conduct prior to first practice.. Let us know if your league needs a sample code of conduct.
