Seasons come and seasons go....
While we all know this old adage, isn't it true that life is composed of a never ending string of seasons? First we have the climatic seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter. Interwoven into these seasons are the growing season, holiday Season, flower season and don't forget baseball and football seasons. And for business people the budget season the selling season and the vacation season. What about the seasons of life? Young, adult, middle age and empty nest? And many of us deal with our health or the season of loss or abundance. I could go on and on.
With all that said, what season or seasons are you in?
Well for me currently its winter. It's cold, wet and gray. That's tough for me because I like to be outside. Additionally I am in the midlife season (turning 50) contemplating what's behind and what's to come. Evan though I don't necessarily enjoy this season, there is great value that can be found in it. For one it forces me to slow down and focus on other things like the inside of my home, my family, my finances (ouch) and even myself. The dormant winter season is great for reflection, focusing and planning. It doesn't hurt that it comes at the beginning of the year to help set the course. And what about the outside? Well even though it is cold, there's good reason to bundle up and snuggle with the ones you love around a fire, tell stories, shiver and laugh! Plus it always seems like the moon and stars are so much brighter on those really cold clear nights. Hey when I really think about it, this is a pretty good season after all!
I hope this season finds each of you well and in a good place. If not remember that Seasons come and seasons go and spring is right around the corner!
Take care and get outside and Enjoy Life! Oh, and we will see you at the Southeastern Flower Show!

Investing In Your Home and Lifestyle Now More Than Ever |
Landscape Coordinator and Designer
|
Chris Higdon Scapes
Now is the time to make landscape improvements. It may be more important than ever to consider what improvements you should make in your landscaping. Needless to say the media has painted a gloomy picture of home sales, and home construction. Whether you are planning to move in the near future, or have no plans to ever move, it is still important to consider your outdoor spaces. If you are looking to sell your home you may need to find a competitive edge over the other homes for sale in your neighborhood. If you are not planning on moving or have decided not to move, you should be looking for ways to improve the enjoyment of your property for the long term.
Regardless of whether you will be selling your home or not, there are certain landscape investments that can give you the greatest impact and return on investment.
Some of these improvements you should consider are:
Landscaping areas that have high visual impact Resolving minor and major problem areas Creating New useable outdoor living spaces

Concrete Pavers as a Great Alternative
|
 |
Landscape Coordinator and Designer Danny Holt, Scapes
Concrete
pavers can be a great alternative for your next outdoor project. The
advantages of using pavers for patios, walkways and driveways include:
a wide choice of colors and sizes to blend with most architectural
styles, lower cost of installation than stone, and its versatility to
be removed and replaced if there were ever any need for access
underground or simply to replace a few pavers due to an oil stain from
a car. Another advantage of this material that is seldom noted is
it's flexibility to our clay soils that are always expanding and
contracting with our weather patterns. Pavers that are placed on
"Crusher Run" bed (compacted granite sand base) are not subject to the
cracking that can occur with concrete, because its flexibility allows
for subtle soil movement. Actually, with all of the joints that make
up a paver pattern, a paver patio is already cracked!
So ask your Scapes Professional if pavers can be a good choice of material for your next driveway, walkway or patio!

Curb Appeal...
|
|
The Scapes Neighborhood Curb Appeal Makeover Show was honored to present at the Riverside North Garden Club meeting in November. Eric King, ASLA asked the garden club to select three homes to be given and landscape design makeover live in front of the other guests. Using a PowerPoint presentation showing pictures taken of the front of each home, Eric would review the good (which was most of the time), the bad and sometimes the ugly of the landscapes and then he gave suggestions to punch up the landscaping and improve the curb appeal. It takes courage to let the world see your own handiwork, but all the homeowners selected were good sports and it was wonderful event. The pot-luck lunch as fantastic bonus!

ASK THE EXPERT |
|
Q: Is it ok to plant this time of year? (Winter)
A: Yes, winter in Atlanta is fairly moderate. The
plants go through less stress and need less water when planted in the Fall or Winter. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, winter is a great time to plant.
