| Lumber Notes - by Jeff Cannon |

Prices for framing lumber and plywood continue to increase
as supply struggles to keep up with higher demand. The wholesale price of framing lumber has
increased approximately 40% since this time last year and the cost of panel
products has increased almost 30% during that same time. The important thing to remember though is
that at this time last year, framing lumber and panel products were at an all
time record low for prices. They really
had no where to go but up.
Commodity
building material products such as roof shingles and drywall are also moving up
in price. All major producers are citing
higher raw material costs and increased demand as the reason. As always, this serves as a good reminder to
verify costs and inventory before quoting large projects.
What
direction will prices head in this quarter is up for some debate. Historically, prices in the 2nd
quarter have decreased as many times as they have increased. Some experts feel if the housing market
cannot sustain itself after the tax credit program expires on April 30th,
demand will decrease and prices will go down.
Others feel the economy has turned the corner and we will continue to
see higher demand for lumber and building products in the second quarter. Stay in touch with your account managers to
make sure you have the latest information.
On your
next visit into our stores, please check out our expanded outdoor living
product selection. We have fencing and
fertilizer, bricks and blocks and decking and railing. Many of these items are on sale for the
entire month of April!

Students in the Biz - Nicholas Di Francesco
|
Nicholas is a 17 year old senior who lives in South Dennis and is concentrating on Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC). For his senior project, he created a model ice hockey rink using an old refrigeration unit and a 4ft. x 4ft. drain pan...pretty cool! He's racked up quite an impressive resume already, having worked with Crockers Refrigeration Services, Seaside Gas Service Inc, and Action Mechanical. He hopes to attend college in the fall and work with an HVAC company during the summers to help perfect his trade. Nicholas' favorite food is pasta, he likes going to the beach, playing golf, baseball and ice hockey (explains his senior project!) Great kids and a great way of helping to foster the next generation of building professionals in Massachusetts! Contact Pat Andrulot at CC Tech for more info at pandrulot@capetech.us |
Students in the Biz - Conrad Mercer
|
Who says real men don't eat quiche...It's Conrads favorite food! Voted the "Tallest Senior" in his class, Conrad is an 18 year old senior study in the Electrical program. For his senior project, he's created a lighting control system to turn off lights in shops to save energy and money. He's also installing an emergency shut off buttons for the main power in the auto technology shop. Pretty impressive. Last year, Conrad won a silver metal at the SkillsUSA Districts for Industrial Motor Control. This year, he won gold at the Districts and will be competing at States in the end of April. Conrad wants to be an electrical engineer, has always loved taking things apart, and loves Sam Diegos! He would like to coop or intern at and electrical company or engineering company. Great kids and a great way of helping to foster the next generation of building professionals in Massachusetts! Contact Pat Andrulot at CC Tech for more info at pandrulot@capetech.us |
