Greetings!
We had the honor of awarding the YMCA Cape Cod with a Legacy Award yesterday. This 1st annual program, designed by Cape & Plymouth Business Magazine, was a fantastic event highlighting the connections between local businesses and non-profits. This month's issue of the magazine paints a good picture of why it's so important to support organizations that support the needs of our communities.
In that same context, please see our info below about our 3rd Annual Build Week - always a good time for a good cause!
We just got word about a new Andersen Window promotion to help remodelers & builders leverage the energy tax rebate with a new incentive ... check it out below.
Click Here to get March's Classifieds!
To the right - you'll see our Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Blog links. There's been a lot of interest lately about Social Media Marketing ... check it out to see what Mid-Cape is doing - and be sure to give us feedback.
As always, thanks for reading

| Lumber Notes - by Jeff Cannon |

Wholesalers and
retailers spent much of January and February replenishing slim
inventories. This coupled with limited
supply drove the wholesale cost of lumber up 33% compared to the same time last
year. Prices have leveled off recently
but there is a feeling that if some of the bigger players start making large
spring buys, prices could jump up again.
Stay tuned.
The recent
earthquake in Chile
is going to cause some problems in the plywood area for the next 60-90
days. Chile was a large exporter of
plywood and the damage caused by the earthquake will pretty much halt plywood
exports for the next couple months. Wholesalers are now out
of some of the thicknesses and domestic AC plywood has gotten very expensive
and is in short supply as a result. As
mills see an opportunity to make some money making AC or UL plywood to make up
for the lack of imports, they will take production out of regular CDX which
will make that more expensive over the next couple months. Bottom line is, check inventory before making
commitments for jobs and check pricing and quotes as this situation plays out.
The folks at the
SBC white cedar shingle mill continue to make improvements to their already
fine product. They are already the only
mill that grades both faces and they already have the highest R&R standards
and now they are the first to add a nailing line to their shingles. The
nail line is embossed on each shingle to provide and instant visual guide for
fastener placement.
We have a couple
new items we'd like you to look at on your next trip to our stores. We have an expanded assortment of patio
blocks and retaining wall blocks. We
have changed our "cold patch" black top patch to a new product from
Perma-Patch. This item can be used year
round under any weather conditions. You
can even fill pot holes that still have water in them!!
We have a new type of primed pine available
in South Dennis on a trial basis. It is
made from Radiata pine and has been treated against moisture and insects, has
clear, virtually defect free faces, had no finger joints, is FSC certified, and
is warranted for 30 years. The product
is called P5 and is ready for you to try now.
Let us know what you think of it.

Students in the Biz
|
This is the next generation of builders, engineers, painters, interior designers, architects, plumbers and more. They are on the cutting edge of technology, environmentally friendly building practices and know their way around a computer. If you're interested in bringing one of these two, or any of the dozens of other students like them, into your operation on a cooperative (coop) educational opportunity or as an intern, contact Pat Andrulot - their student advisor at Cape Cod Tech.

Students in the Biz - Jonathan Rich
|
A 17 year old Barnstable resident, Jonathan is a standout at Cape Cod Technical High School. His course of study is HVAC and he recently won a Gold Medal at the Skills USA district competition. For his senior project, he created a small, working model of a heated driveway system. He used a small water heater and water circulator to pum the hot water through through the tubing. Pretty impressive. When not working hard at school, he also works hard at his coop position with Tavano Mechanical Systems. Jonathan is the Captain of both the Baseball and Hockey Teams at school and was recently accepted to Dartmouth. He's likely going to choose the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to study Mechanical Engineering.
Great kids and a great way of helping to foster the next generation of building professionals in Massachusetts! Contact Pat Andrulot at CC Tech for more info at pandrulot@capetech.us |
Students in the Biz - Matt Mansfield
|
Another standout student, Matt is a 17 year old Marstons Mills resident who is studying Carpentry at Cape Cod Tech. When not studying hard for school, Matt enjoys working on his Toyota 4Runner and helping his father build and install custom kitchen cabinets. (talent must run in the family!) For his current project, he is building a custom toolbox and bed for his truck. Matt is interested in pursuing a career in custom kitchen building and is looking for an internship or coop program with a company that has a kitchen division. When he graduates, Matt is planning to head to the New England School of Architectural Woodworking in Easthampton, MA. Great kids and a great way of helping to foster the next generation of building professionals in Massachusetts! Contact Pat Andrulot at CC Tech for more info at pandrulot@capetech.us |
