» Tech Tip Of The Month » Busy Summer Days!
September arrives with summer still in tow. It was a slow start but the the last few weeks have been as crazy as ever down in the Service Department. I'm sure some have noticed that in the mid-summer months we sometimes have a difficult time accommodating unscheduled services. We do our best to keep everyone on the road and on schedule but sometimes there just isn't enough time in the day. Our scheduler seems to be calming a bit and with the summer winding down, kids back in school, and the roads clearer, there's still time for a fantastic fall motorcycle trip. So give us a call or go on-line and get everything ready for a great fall season of motorcycle riding and hopefully a few more road trips. And don't forget that when the sun finally does retreat behind the clouds for the long winter months, we can probably fit you in whenever you want, with hardly any wait and probably some discounts to go along. Say tuned, and lets hope a great fall will make up for the slow start to our summer.

» Parts Department » The Low-down on Lowering
For many years, BMW has been synonymous with long-leggedness... both literal and figurative. While the bikes are more than capable of chaining multiple thousand-mile days together, many shorter riders find it's tough to get off the centerstand and out of the driveway comfortably. The "factory lowered" option is becoming more common, but there are plenty of ways for inseam-challenged riders with existing bikes to get a little better contact with the ground.
// SEAT
The first and most cost-effective option will always be addressing your seat. BMW offers a low seat for most models, and there are also aftermarket options allowing even more customization. Lowered seats are available for as little as $300 and can drop your seat height by up to two inches. Often a lowered seat will also be narrower, making it even easier to get your legs down. With a seat swap, your bike's handling characteristics are unchanged (outside of a slightly lower center of gravity!), your stock sidestand and centerstand both work as designed. In most cases, no additional labor is required.
// SPRINGS Depending on the condition of your stock shocks or struts (they usually get worn out over 40-50k miles), lower-mileage bikes achieve about an inch of lowering by just replacing the springs. We've had great luck with spring kits from Danish brand Hyperpro, usually in the neighborhood of about $350. Be aware, though, that any lowering of the suspension will usually require a modified or purpose-built lowered centerstand and sidestand (prices vary by model, but expect at least $150 each). Labor for the spring swap would run in the neighborhood of 5 hours, depending on model.
// STRUTS
If your stock shocks or struts already have higher mileage on them, lowering just the springs could result in a harsh, unresponsive ride. Replacing the entire strut with a new purpose-designed lowered strut can bring the bike down 1 - 2 inches, yet still renew the overall response of the suspension - plus this allows you to get the springs tuned to your exact weight and riding style. There are a variety of options out there, ranging from $1200 to $2400 for front and rear, depending on adjustability and performance. Again, the centerstand and sidestand would also have to be updated, and the labor would be about the same at about 5 hours.
If you have questions regarding your specific bike and lowering needs, please feel free to contact the parts department to get the process started for you. There's no reason to feel uncomfortable or intimidated by your bike's height when confidence is only an inch or two away.

ALTRIDER K1600GT / GTL PROTECTION BARS //
We've just received our first shipment of these innovative new protection bars from our friends at AltRider. As with all their products, the build quality of these new bars is first class all the way. But it doesn't' stop there. If you take a good look at the design of the bars, you'll see the various creative attachment points, protecting the bike and its components better in the event of a tip-over. And for those of you who opted for the factory fog lights, or if you plan to add lights, you can now mount them safely to the inside of the AltRider bar, protecting the lights from breaking off. AltRider is the only manufacturer to incorporate these mounting points which we believe makes them the ultimate choice in protection for your new GT or GTL (p.s., you can also mount highway pegs to them!).
PUGET SOUND SAFETY MOTORCYCLE RECOVERY KIT //
Still the best piece of safety gear you can carry off road! As your adventure travels take you to more remote and desolate areas, carrying a motorcycle recovery kit might be the best investment you will ever make, especially if your motorcycle decides to find its way into a ravine or down a steep embankment. With a few select pulleys, strong rope, some elbow grease and a few trees, you can literally winch your bike out of a jam yourself using this kit! Adventure riders, this kit is worth its weight in gold.

STABIL & STARTRON ETHANOL TREATMENT //
Chances are you've had the pleasure of getting a bad tank of gas from your local petrol dealer. We've even found that some brands of gas or even batches of gas are worse than others, and when you put this junk in your tank all kinds of bad stuff happens - missing, sputtering, knocking and pinging, sluggish performance, corrosion on your fuel sender strip, you name it. Ethanol treatment products will help with all these symptoms and issues, evaporate the water and make today's fuel easier to burn. We suggest you get in the habit of using it until gas is gas again.
ROX BOX RISERS // Bar risers are a must for any serious dual sport rider, or for anyone who just wants more comfort out of their motorcycle. Rox risers are infinitely adjustable and help take the crouch out of standing on the pegs (for taller riders), as well as ease the shoulder tension for riders who are looking for a more upright position. Perfect for the F800GS, F800ST, R12R. Note that some bikes will require a longer brake and / or clutch cable. Let us help you find the right combination for your bike.

CARDO SYSTEMS SCALA RIDER G9 // This may be the best, most versatile Bluetooth system yet for rider to passenger or rider to rider communications. Now connect up to 8 riders, with voice commands! Pair your modern smart phone wirelessly for streaming stereo music. Talk to your passenger, take an important phone call, then get GPS directions. It's easy with the latest G9 headset by Cardo.

TOURATECH ZEGA PRO PANNIERS //
One of the nicest looking cases we've seen (especially in black), these super strong aluminum panniers compliment any R12GS, F800 GS or R1200R. When you need big storage and rugged protection, Touratech Zega Pro sets the pace for durability and style.
BMW MOTORCYCLE FALL 2012 ISSUE // Don't forget to grab a copy of our BMW Motorcycle Fall issue at Ride West today!
If you have any questions, please let us know and we will further assist you!

» Ask MotoAdventureGal » By Alissa Clickenger
Dear MotoAdventureGal:
I live in Albuquerque and it's HOT here in the summer. Do you have any tips for staying cool while riding?
MotoAdventureGal Says:
Well, first on my list is a well-vented motorcycle riding suit (I am currently riding in the Klim Latitude pants and jacket--even though they are designed for men, the suit has some features that make it quite comfy on my female frame) . There are also some mesh jackets on the market that have good protection, too. Under either of those I'd definitely wear a moisture wicking layer and wet it frequently (I'm using Klims Solstice base layer). This of course works best in the dryer climates. I also wet down my head/hair--cooling down my core and my head goes a long ways towards cooling my whole hot self off. Don't be tempted to ride without gear; you actually get hotter with the sun and wind directly on your skin.
That said, I've recently been riding with a cooling vest. Using evaporative cooling and hi-tech fabrics, the Kula-XD Cooling Vest cools down your core while riding. The down side (I found) is that it became just another hot, wet layer when I was stopped. Many riders I've talked to swear by them; and since my friends at Dive N Ride Adventures sold out of them at the AMA Women & Motorcycling conference last month, I think most folks are quite happy with them.
One other thing I want to mention is how important staying hydrated is. Keep drinking water and some electrolytes, especially if you are out in the heat for an extended period of time. I know, for myself, that I am in the danger zone when I start getting that "I don't give a crap about anything" attitude. I don't care if I ride, I don't care if I stop, I don't care if I am hot or tired. I just keep riding like a zombie. There's no good that can come from getting to that point, so it's best to try and avoid getting to that zone altogether.

» A Message From Our Owners » Save Our World!

Keith Thye is the president of Ride West BMW in Seattle. His wife Ann Thye is the owner, and the two of them have been the leading BMW dealers in the Northwest for the past 15 years. They also own South Sound Motorcycles (BMW and Ural) in Fife, Washington.
In the early 1960's Keith and a friend dropped out of college temporarily to take an eight month long motorcycle trip through Central and South America on a couple of BMW R50's. That adventure was related n the book Moto Raid ("motorcycle ride" in Spanish).
In early 2013, Keith, with the same friend plus the addition of a few others, will celebrate the fifty year anniversary of that ride by repeating it, albeit in less time and with more comfort. Keith has been racking up miles on his new F800GS in preparation for the trip.
Over the past decades Keith has racked up several hundred thousand miles on BMW motorcycles, including more than a dozen trips all over the United States with Ann as his passenger.
» Please take some time and [READ] Keith's well written poem titled, 'Save Our World!' which also sums up his philosophy.
