Inclement Weather

This month Dave Preston interviews GM Dave Swezey about riding in inclement weather.

DP: Dave, we have the opportunity to ride in "inclement" weather quite often in the northwest. Motorcyclists all have their own definitions of "inclement," with some putting their bikes in storage when the temperature drops below 55 degrees, and others considering not riding if there is snow or ice. What sorts of weather would cause you to not ride?

DS: About the only weather I don't enjoy riding in is when the road surface is icy or thick with snow. Been there, done that, and fell down!

DP: Would your answer to the first question be affected by whether you are riding on pavement or dirt, and if so, why?

DS: Not exactly. Riding with knobby tires in the snow on a gravel road can be a lot of fun. Riding with knobby tires on a frozen, slick, snow covered mountain pass highway...doable but not so much fun

DP: What are the most important pieces of equipment a rider should equip him or herself with if a ride in an all day rain is on the agenda?

DS: I think this holds true for just about every outdoor activity I enjoy; skiing, hiking, biking, and motorcycling. To enjoy these activities in nasty weather you have to stay dry so investing in good waterproof gear is essential. [Read More]

Safety Corner

What the Fear? By Kyle McCarty

I typically take several rider-training courses and ride about 30,000 miles annually. I thought I was an 'OK' rider. Yet, in a recent class, approaching the apex of a curve, I panicked. A sudden flash of doubt, about not making the corner, crept in. Fear instantly locked my arms and opened my eyes WIDE. I couldn't  think or breath... and, off-the-road I went! I quickly turned my Sport Tourer into a Dual-Sport Tourer!

For the record, my feeble attempt to communicate at the curve by 'screaming like a little girl' wasn't in any way effective. It was a waste of time and a waste of effort.

Fortunately, a trained muscle response to "straiten the bars" and "look up" (where I now wanted to go) took over. Luckily, there was plenty of run-off that I could apply my rear brake (only) and stop. I did not crash. I did, however, significantly bruise my ego.

Talking with other students and couches, we realized that "FEAR" was something we have all encountered at some point in riding. We had each become over-stressed.

How? Why?

Think back to how you responded the last time you suddenly saw Mr. Officer-Friendly behind you with all the lights and sirens blazing. What a rush! (That's how 'fear' can affect us). My rushes, especially when Mr. Friendly didn't pass by, haven't' always been good. [Read More]

All Signs Point to Ride West Parking Lot!

Meet Adam Shani. Adam left his home country of Israel 2.5 years ago on his BMW HP2 Enduro. He expects to return to Israel in about 6 months, adding to the 95,000 miles he has put on his bike so far!

His route has taken him from Israel to the south of Africa, and then across Asia to Japan. Then across Russia to Europe, and on to South America and Central America on his roundabout journey to Seattle. From here he intends to ship the bike to New Zealand and then meander home.

When asked what his strongest impression has been in 2 and a half years on the road in all of these countries, Adam answered simply "People are good." All along the way he has been deluged by kind people from all walks of life and all income levels going out of their way to offer help and assistance, even though he rarely needs it.

Adam faced a challenge in funding this trip. He explained that as a diesel mechanic he has no trouble finding work, but that it is hard to save up money in Israel because both the cost of living and taxes are very high. Solution? He took a job as the manager of a construction company maintenance shop in Africa and worked long hours pretty much 7 days a week for two years to earn the money.

Adam visited Ride West to pick up some parts. The good folks at TouraTech are loaning him shop space so had can take care of some needed maintenance - for one thing, his HP2 Enduro now has almost 100,000 miles (he started with 5,000 on the odometer) and it needs a new clutch!

What an inspiration.

Tech Tip Of The Month

Service Schedule

This month it's all about saving you money!

We are a month into our winter specials, and we have some really good bargains that you should take advantage of while you can. Along with the fantastic savings, we are also offering free pick-up for repairs exceeding $250

If you only require minor repairs, we may still be able to help you out with transportation.  For instance, if we are already in your area picking up another motorcycle we can fit two in our fully-enclosed sprinter van. Please don't hesitate to call or e-mail us in Service; I'm sure we can figure out how to get your motorcycle into the shop for needed work during these slower (colder, icier, wetter) months.

We can stay busy and you can save money. Ride West is committed to great service work year-round, so keep us in mind for any two-wheeled vehicle repairs or modifications you might fancy. See the Winter Service Specials at the top of this Newsletter. Stay safe and Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays from Ride West BMW!

Holiday gifts for the person that has everything - Get the rider in your family something special this holiday season at Ride West BMW Motorcycles. Here are just a few great gifts to consider if you're just out of ideas:

Washington Backroads Discovery Route DVD - This inspirational DVD by Noren Films will keep any rider in good spirits during the rainy months. It documents a scenic driving route across Washington State, from Oregon to Canada, for dualsport adventure motorcycles and 4x4 vehicles. Follow Sterling, Helge and the gang down this 600 mile journey on primarily dirt backroads through the Cascade Mountains. This DVD is 2 hours in length, and includes Route planning videos, GPS tracks and a lot of fun in the dirt! While you're at it, you might as well get the accompanying map.

10 Years on 2 Wheels: A photographer's journey around the world - Follow Helge Pedersen around the world in this unusual and exciting travel story. For more than 10 years, Helge and Olga, his sturdy BMW motorcycle, travelled in vagabond style. Their journey took them across 5 continents and over 250,000 miles. This book documents the journey, is full of beautiful color photographs and even more colorful stories. Today, Helge continues his passion for world travel with his tour company Globeriders. This book is finally available again (after being out of print for some time) and is an essential keepsake for the motorcyclist in your family.

BMW Shampoo and Express Wax - If they aren't riding their BMW all winter, they're certainly staring at it, fondly, waiting for that sunny day to hear its purr (or roar) once again. In the mean time, all bikes should look their best during the holidays and using BMW Shampoo and Express Wax is the best way to keep them that way. In fact, most riders agree that when their motorcycle is clean, it runs better and seems generally happier. So now, walk to the garage and take a peek...do you see a happy motorcycle?

 s

Cruz Tools: Road Tech B1 BMW Tool Kit - All riders like tools and here's a great set that includes the essential items for every day tinkering. The Cruz Tools BMW Kit comes in a handy tool roll that travels well. If the person on your gift list is new to motorcycling, this is a great gift to start their every rider's essentials kit. Other "newbee" items include a tire gauge, tire repair kit, chain lube, oh and maybe a GPS!

Bluetooth Headsets - Communication for motorcyclists has come a long way and so have Bluetooth Headsets. We have several to choose from, most notably the Scala G4 by Cardo Systems, and most recently the Sena SMH10.   Pair your GPS, cell phone and audio system wirelessly, in stereo, for around $200.00 to $289.00 a headset, or about $400.00 on up for a rider / passenger setup. These high quality headsets all support the all latest smart phones (with voice commands), and you can easily communicate to your passenger (or other rider) without having to yell through helmets. Having a conversation on a bike may or may not be your forte, but it sure can make sharing an adventure that much better.

AllRound Boots by BMW - Everyone needs a good pair of riding boots. Take a look in the closet and see if the rider in your family is due. Do they smell? Are the soles wearing off? The AllRound Boot by BMW is lightweight, sturdy, GORETEX lined and built to last. At $235.00, this boot is a bargain and comes with BMW's unprecedented 2 year clothing warranty. For those every day commuters, we also carry the brand new ProTour 2 Boot for the ultimate in longevity and construction, priced at $349.00.

A Message From Our Owners

Big Plans for Ride West BMW

Ann&Keith2

The world is in a mess (we probably did not need to remind you of that).  As this missive is being written, the DOW has tumbled over 500 points in two days, congress is at an impasse about everything and anything, the U.S. is fighting several wars, the rest of the world is in conflict, unemployment is not improving, businesses are bumping along the bottom, and the personal finances of many of the country's constituents are in tatters.  Trying to run a business in this type of economy is interesting, to say the least.  And as this business, in particular, begins to enter our soft season we begin to analyze what we can do to maximize our effectiveness.  Our answer:  we suggest that you GET OUT AND RIDE.  And we are going to help you do it.

Here is the good news.  One thing that we have going for us in this part of the country is that, for the most part, we can ride all year long.  Ok, the weather turns cold and it gets pretty wet, but these are things that we can contend with.  It is the frigid temperatures and snow and ice in other parts of the country that gives us the advantage.  And we understand that there is a good portion of the riding public that simply will not don the rain gear and heated clothing.  But for the rest of us, that is what they make these products for.  And we have found, as you probably have, that firing up your machine and getting about a half block from home seems to make all of the problems in your life disappear, or at least seem rather insignificant for the time slung on the saddle.

All right, we have determined that riding, even in inclement weather, is a good thing.  But why ride?  Well, we intend to help in this regard.  Team Ride West has put together a unbelievable list of activities throughout the winter months that may entice you to push the starter button.  We have demo rides, slide shows, seminars, rotating sale items, dinner get-togethers, riding classes, maintenance clinics and monthly rides, even through the winter months.  You don't have to ride to these events, but many do and the exhilaration we get out of seeing a parking lot full of motorcycles at 7:30 on a winter evening gives us goose-bumps.  So help us out in maximizing our effectiveness.  GET OUT AND RIDE.
