| Greetings!
The Good Times (and Good Riding Season) are Finally Here!
Whew! What a looooong winter that was! Not just the weather, which was tough even for Seattle natives. First we had to deal with a down economy, a trying time for everyone, and then at Ride West the ironic reverse. We had such a wonderful April, thanks to customers like you, that we rose to the pinnacle - #1 in BMW Sales in America! Thank you! Then came May, and we continued to sell bikes as BMW began to run a bit dry in the pipeline. By the end of May we were within a dozen bikes of being OUT of 2011 BMW's! Zilch! Nada! Sorry! But now it is June, the bikes are coming in again, the sun is out on more than a rare occasion, and the coming months are packed with events!
First we offer a FREE seminar on how to get the most of out the RawHyde Pacific NW Adventure Riding Rally featuring RawHyde staff here at Ride West on Tuesday, June 7th. Be sure to register for it on our web site. At the end of the month we will be participating in the rally itself in the Leavenworth area from June 23 - 26th. Hope you plan to join us!
Other June highlights include basic MSF classes and Maintenance 1 and 2 classes here at Ride West, and a PSS Advanced Street Skills clinic at Pacific Raceways which we will be supporting on Wednesday the 22nd.
We've also been busy with off-site appearances at both the Everett Naval Base and the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, and this month Dave Preston goes for a ride with sailors from the USS Lincoln. We have also sent Dave off to support a high speed riding class at the WSP training center in Shelton.
In short, the season is ON and we say - Bring it! Hope you can ride with us soon!

Safety Corner From Student to Instructor to Student

David Weed

The throttle screamed and the student's eyes where dinner-plate wide as they rocketed across the range straight for me. After my instantaneous internal reaction of not-fit-to-print expressive vocabulary, my mind leapt to the startling realization that "Now I am really doing this."
I've recently transitioned from a rider intent on increasing skills in motorcycling to helping others learn to find desire and skill in themselves as an MSF RiderCoach. The transition involved the background work necessary to be accepted as an instructor candidate, attending and completing the Washington Motorcycle Safety Program (WMSP) Instructor Prep certification class put on by the state, and teaching two classes under the watchful eyes of a Mentor Instructor. In short a transition from student to instructor and in a very real sense, back to student again. [Read More]

Women's Empowerment Motorcycle Tour
June 24- July 2, 2011
Our "Women's Empowerment Motorcycle Tour" is a unique concept for motorcycle tours. Designed as a rolling classroom, we will teach you "how" to tour on a motorcycle. Besides the normal tour itinerary and riding enjoyment, we will include pre-trip personal coaching, skill building exercises, and mid-tour seminars to give every tour member a toolbox of skills they can rely on when planning or implementing their own future trips. We'll ride many of the best roads in the Pacific Northwest, see a variety of landscapes, and ride in a variety climates. We'll make time each day to take care of ourselves, and since we're riding our own machines we'll learn to look after them a bit as well. We'll eat delicious food, we'll sleep in comfortable mid-range hotels, and we'll even have a rest day. [Read More]

What You Missed
Jack Lewis Book Signing
Jack Lewis is very special to us here atRide West BMW. You might be familiar with his frequent columns in Motorcyclist magazine, which from time to time feature a BMW borrowed from us. In addition, Jack is a former employee!
More to the point, Jack is a prolific author of prodigious talent. His latest book is "Nothing In Reserve." Having served our country in the 1980.s Jack decided to go back into the reserves shortly after the world disaster of September 11th, 2000. Nothing in Reserve details his experiences in the war, and the difficulties of returning to civilian life that so many of our troops face. It is an absolutely gripping book.
On May 7th we hosted Jack and his wife Shasta for a book signing for his new book. Shasta brought home baked brownies and cookies, and we did our best to get the word out. It was a great time!

Tech Tip Of The Month
Pack Light, Pack Right
With the summer finally upon us, motorcycle trips are getting planned and taking place. We've touched base on securing the load to your trusty steed, but your vehicles maximum weight load (driver+passenger+all their stuff) should also be kept in mind. Even an employee at Ride West was recently surprised to see the new K1600GT's max load was only 460 lbs; they thought it should be more. It's not surprising to hear, seeing as most of the travelers that come through Ride West throughout the year are overloaded, and by far exceeding their vehicle's maximum load capacity.
Although Beemers will carry much more than is recommended, the extra weight can (and will) affect the handling and longevity of components. The owner's manual and even most saddlebags will have the maximum recommended load capacity listed and should be a guideline for your pre-packing setup. I'm not saying you can't over-fill and over-pack but a lighter overall package could be more enjoyable to ride, so packing light and packing right might be the answer. Not to mention keeping your motorcycles' components happier by allowing them to operate in the range they were designed for. Making each trip the best it can be takes planning and practice, and Ride West has the tools and expertise to help. Best of luck in all your summer riding adventures!

What's New In The Parts Department?
A Very Special Swap "Thank You"
Year after year we are always amazed at the turnout of our semi-annual Parts Swap. This May was no exception and we're thrilled to report it was once again the biggest Swap ever! It's getting so big that we will be making some important changes for this fall to make your shopping experience much easier and quicker than before (stay tuned). The Parts Swap is all about riding gear, but there were some great deals on some hard-to-find used parts as well. Whether you were buying or selling, chances are you made out like a bandit on great stuff you can't find (or sell) at a better price! For the next Parts Swap, we're working feverishly to get the word out in more media outlets, as well as redesigning how the whole event works, including streamlining the checkout process, getting more detailed descriptions on the merchandise, inventorying used merchandise, and adding more one-time special purchases (new products) that are as good of a deal as some of the used gear. So thanks again for your participation and patience as this great event continues to grow. We'll announce more changes as the months pass and hope to expand the Parts Swap into a more "Store Wide" event.
New and Noteworthy Products

Auxiliary Lighting Kits - Adding lights to your motorcycle can be the best way to see better at night and dramatically increase your conspicuity - or visibility to other drivers. Today's auxiliary lighting kits offer a wide array of lighting options that all have a slightly different purpose. Use for long dark highways, fog or flashing LED's to be more visible to others. Adventure riders sometimes add both a HID driving beam and a slightly wider dispersion off road pattern light kit. Together with a high output headlamp, auxiliary lighting is something you'll wonder how you ever did without. And with today's LED and HID technology, the stress on your bike's charging system is very minimal. We have assembled a wide variety of lighting kits to suit any need. Here's one of our favorite new lighting products: Trail Tech LED lights are built rugged and off-road tough. This brand new LED technology outputs 800 lumens in a tight, well-designed form. Their focused, forward lighting allows extreme visibility in night-time conditions. They take advantage of Trail Tech's line of specialized mounts, so you know you can put them where you want. Flat surface, solid post, handlebar, or helmet; Trail Tech's got you covered. A button on the back swaps between high, medium and low output - allowing you to either conserve battery life (for setting up camp!) or all-out assault the night. Hardened glass lenses, vibration isolation and machined aluminum bodies help them to have a hardy lifespan. Available at Ride West BMW Motorcycles now (please specify mount when ordering).

A Message From Our Owners
A Visit from an Old Friend
Dick Bruce came to visit us at the dealership the other day. He had a book on the history of BMW that he wanted to present to us, because over the years he has become more than a customer; he has become a friend. It doesn't matter that the book is written in French, it was the thought that counts. Dick is 98 years old, and although he had his grandson drive him here, he got out of the car and entered the building under his own power.

We first met Dick about 15 years ago, when the dealership was in the old funky building in the Greenlake area. Our sales manager at the time asked us if we would mind delivering a new bike to a customer in the SeaTac area. So we loaded it up on the trailer and off we went. But the address was wrong, or at least it seemed to be. When we found the place it was a retirement community tucked down in a residential area. Thinking that we had written the address incorrectly we drove past and on down the street. We would have called the shop to confirm the address, but this was when cell phones looked like bricks and were about as heavy. As we drove back up the street we saw a guy standing about a block within the retirement community waving frantically at us. We drove down to see what the problem was and Dick Bruce introduced himself to us. He was 85 years old and we were delivering his brand new R1200C BMW Cruiser to him. His wife came out and said "I wish he would not do these things".
Dick rode the bike several times to Montana and throughout the Northwest over the next several years, and we saw him occasionally when he would stop by the shop, quite often during the bi-yearly Bike Swaps that we hold. He came in yesterday, a spry 98 plus years old, and said that he decided to finally sell his beloved BMW as he was just not able to ride it anymore. He gave up riding to stay by his wife's side as she was failing. He rode a couple of times after she died and realized that it was time to sell.
Before he left the showroom he he said he wanted to take one last look at all of the new models, and as we left him he and his grandson were admiring a new S1000RR. We wouldn't be surprised to find him in here next week with a down payment. We have commented many times before that it is the customers that make this business particularly fun, and Dick Bruce is certainly one of those customers. What an inspiration!
