Safety Corner Spring Cleaning by David Preston
It might seem odd to have an article on "Spring Cleaning" in the May issue of this newsletter, as it is a little late. But, as we all must agree, Spring itself is a little late! As the prime riding season approaches (finally), it's time to clean out the garage, clean the bike, the gear, and the mind. (What?) Hang on for a few sentences.
BMW had a classic ad that ran in several media that was very effective. The gist of it was "I bought this bike to ride it, not to wash it." The point it made, effectively, was that BMW motorcycles are made to be ridden, not just 'posed.' However, there's no reason to get carried away with the literal meaning behind a figurative ad line. It's true that you can operate your BMW for several years without every washing it, but there are good reasons to invest some quality time in cleaning, and that investment can enhance safety. BMW reaches out to our troops!
BMW is promoting safe riding by providing a $1480 "Safety Pack" to all active duty military personnel who purchase a new 2011 BMW S 1000RR sport bike. The poster proclaims that "The fastest superbike is also the safest," and essentially they are picking up the tab for the race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control options. Cool deal! Tech Tip Of The Month
Low-octane Gas & Fuel Systems

Throughout the winter Ride West's Service Department, along with our customers, has been questioning the North American fuel supply and it's additives. The type of fuel we put in our machines can have a real effect on our motorcycles' performance. It seems that low-octane fuel, as well as additives like ethenol are causing adverse affects.
Our BMW motorcycles are designed and tuned using high octane fuel that doesn't contain U.S. additives like ethenol. We can't do anything about the additives that are in our fuel, but we can and need to make sure we use top tier fuel suppliers and high octane fuels to keep the fuel injection systems working as well as they can. I know it's not always possible but, keep it in mind when you fill up and the first thing to come to mind if your fuel injection system throws a hiccup your way.
BMW recommends having your fuel system cleaned every year - they provided Ride West with a dynamic fuel injector cleaning system. We also have available a fuel injector cleaning solution that you add to your fuel as added prevention of problems. So next time your fuel is running low, choose to fill up wisely. Everytime we call BMW about any runnability issue, the first culprit they look to is the fuel that has been supplied to the tank. Have fun this month; think warm, dry pavement and clean fuel systems.

A Message from the Parts Department
What are Base Layers - Many people ask what "base layers" are and why they need them. Are they long underwear? Heated clothing? Climbing gear? Ski underwear? Not exactly, base layers are specially designed garments that you wear under your riding gear, proving comfort in any riding condition. Is there a difference in brands? Definitely! Good quality base layers tend to be much more advanced in what they can do for your overall comfort, compared to say basic long johns or simple fleece. For starters, base layers help manage moisture, more specifically perspiration and body temperature. Many base layer systems achieve this by utilizing Hi-tech fabrics like Cool Max (a moisture wicking nylon), PCM (phase change material, that stores heat), Silver Function (a wicking nylon that uses silver thread to minimize odor and microbial junk) and GORETEX which has many useful functions (Wind Stopper, waterproof, breathable). So why are they essential to motorcycling? They greatly enhance comfort. More than anything, riding a motorcycle should be fun, and when you're comfortably warm and dry you can forget about the elements allowing you to focus on the important things, like grinning ear to ear! Poor quality base layers don't breathe well, meaning you will undoubtedly sweat and either overheat, or worse, freeze over that next mountain pass. And may not work with your existing riding gear, meaning you might have the wrong base layer combined with your jacket's built-in thermal layer. You may want a base layer that blocks wind but is still highly water repellent and breathable, for under a mesh riding jacket as an example. With the correct performance layers combined in harmony with your protective riding gear, you can virtually eliminate ever being too hot or cold and keep enjoying the good stuff! We have a wide variety of base layers to suit any riding season. Stop by and have one of our clothing specialists show you the latest in comfortable base layers from BMW and Rev'it! A Message From Our Owners

It's not your father's Oldsmobile (make that BMW motorcycle) anymore. In the case of Olds, however, they ended up going out of business. We certainly hope that is not the case with BMW motorcycles, and we don't think so because Motorrad seems to be getting their act together.
BMW historically has been a niche player in the motorcycle industry. You've heard the comments: stodgy, uninspiring but dependable, underpowered, classic (a little too much so), an old guy's bike, etc. And for a lot of years they were content with about 2% of the motorcycle market in this country, although they did considerably better worldwide. But about fifteen years ago things began to change. BMW realized that the demographics of the industry were leaving them behind and in order to grow (and they had to, or get out of it) they needed to totally reconfigure the company. They began thinking 10 to 15 years ahead in product design, spent 50 million dollars rebuilding the factory, and made a "bet all of the cards" on the branding. These things do not happen overnight and for the past several years we have been experiencing the results of this long term planning. And we like what we see.
We now have four different engine configurations available in numerous models. Many of these models are oriented towards new segment buyers (at least new for BMW). For fifty years BMW was focused on touring motorcycles, and they did just fine with that. Then in the early 1980's they created a new segment with the dual sport R80GS. They liked the results of this and moved into four cylinder water cooled engines followed by singles, parallel twins, and now a six cylinder power plant.
If you have been following the industry over the three years then you know that the motorcycle business has been in free-fall. Some brands have been off as much as 80% in new unit sales. Over the 2008 and 2009 period BMW in this country was off 21%, and yet had the best performance of all the major brands. The relevant market collapsed 20% in 2010 (models that BMW actively competes in), back to the volume of 12 years ago. But things are moderating, particularly for BMW. The introduction of the S1000RR in early 2010 helped BMW to achieve a worldwide increase of 12%, to 98,000 units and substantially increase it's market share. And now this month the new K1600's, GT and GTL, will hit the showrooms. The magazines have been calling these new bikes "game changers", in that just about every aspect of these new motorcycles sets a new standard for touring machines. So it certainly is not your father's BMW motorcycle, and we think the future is very bright for this brand. Count on BMW continuing to set the standard for much more to come in the future.
