When Does "the Season" Start?
For some motorcycle enthusiasts, the riding season is 365 days long - with a bonus day every 4th year! If you took a careful survey on the most challenging riding days of the year, you would undoubtedly find BMW riders in percentages far above BMWs "market share." A tip of the Ride West BMW hat to a few other hardy souls, who also seem to be out and about in all weathers. For others, riding a motorcycle is much more fun when it is at least "warmish" and dry, so as Spring begins to be more than a distant concept, the urge to ride grows more intense. One motorcycle industry veteran defines the start of the riding season as "the 3rd sunny Saturday in a row." According to him, once that 3rd Saturday of reasonable weather arrives, the showroom gets busy and things resume the hectic pace we prefer. [Full Story]

What is WABDR?
Washington Backcountry Discovery Route
The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR) is a scenic route across Washington State from Oregon to Canada through the Cascade Mountain Range. The 600-mile route follows a connection of mostly unpaved back roads that can be ridden on dual-sport and adventure motorcycles or driven in 4x4 and high-clearance 4WD vehicles. S horai Batteries Update - The new lithium - iron LFX rechargeable motorcycle batteries from Shorai are in fact very powerful and lightweight. We're convinced that they will be the wave of the future for the Power sports industry, weighing in on average about 7 pounds lighter than most stock BMW ba tteries and they have more cranking power to boot. What else can we ask for? Another shipment of these incredible batteries will be in within the next week or so, to fit almost every BMW Motorcycle (or any other bike you may own). For you F650GS and Dakar guys, this maintenance-free, spill-proof battery is perfect for on/off road applications.  Pilot Road 3 - The latest (and greatest) sport touring tire from Michelin. "As the Sport Touring Motorcycle tire market grows, Michelin responds with the new Pilot Road 3 tire," said Gary Midkiff, vice president of Michelin North America's two wheel division. "Tires in this segment have to be adaptable to many different types of motorcycles, as well as a variety of weather and riding conditions. With its XST X-Sipes, the Pilot Road 3 tire will be the benchmark of the Sport Touring Motorcycle Radial class."
The most distinctive feature of the MICHELIN Pilot Road 3 tire is its revolutionary new X-Sipe Technology (XST), which adds a unique look to the distinctive tread pattern pioneered on the MICHELIN Pilot Road 2 tire. The full-depth sipes help evacuate any water underneath the tire by allowing additional draining capacity of the tread as well as generate pressures at the edge of the sipe blade to break up water film. Staff Favorites:  Jiffy Tite Fuel Quick Connects - If you've ever had to remove your fuel tank to get to the battery, or wire up some hot new accessory that required you to remove bodywork, you may have inadvertently become aware of the fuel connection fittings as gas flowed all over the ground. They can break if not handled with care. Jiffy Tite makes anodized machined aluminum fuel quick connects with permanent seals and check valves (no o-rings to replace). Whether you do your own work or have our Service Department do the job, there's no doubt these are one of the best (and safest) investments you can make for your late (or early) model BMW. Tech Tip of the Month
Last Chance to Save! Any Make or Model!
 The sun has finally shown itself and business at Ride West is picking up. The end of January felt like a busy summer month down in the Service Department with customers trying to get in at the last minute for the "oilhead" discount. A reminder that we still have one more month of other great Service Department discounts, so don't miss out on those; no matter which type of bike you own (BMW or another brand) you've got 28 days to save! I know I'm not the only one hoping for a better summer this year than last, and getting your motorcycle ready for the season early will let you take advantage of whatever kind of day mother nature throws your way. Now is the time to get those chain and sprocket kits coming, tires on the way or an inspection so there are no surprises when you head out for a ride. It's also time to plug in the battery chargers, air up the tires and get your cycle freshened up. And please do remember; if you can't get your motorcycle down to us, we can come to you! Our sprinter van can fit at least two bikes in its cavernous hold. So give us a call or send an e-mail and we'll help you take advantage of our remaining service specials. :)

A Message From Our Owners:
Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring!
This time of year is always a dichotomy in this business---it's the dead of winter and we are scrambling. Our sales curve in this business is almost a perfect bell curve, with our sales in the winter months being about half of what they are during the summer months. The dichotomy is that we are on the verge of our spring sales increases and so we have a tremendous amount of optimism built up. Plus, we nearly always have a number of new model introductions that are about to be introduced at this time of year. And that happens to be the case for 2011.
Along with the new model introductions (addressed in the next paragraph) we have about a zillion events planned over the balance of the year. Most of you know Dave Preston. He was a valuable addition to our staff one year ago and has taken us to new heights in our activities endeavors. Along with Dave Swezey, Ride West's General Manager, and the balance of the staff here, we look forward to a year chock full of rides, seminars, rally's, slide shows, technical sessions, bike swaps, demo rides, used parts and accessory parts swaps, and more, hence our excitement. And, of course, we hope that these events generate additional sales so we can begin the cycle again and hopefully navigate next winter easier than the past one.
The other exciting things about this time of year are the new model introductions---and we have several this year. The F800R is being brought to this country (finally) in late January. This bike has been available in Europe and we are excited about it's entry into our lineup. In late February the triple-black R1200GS arrives and in March the reworked G650GS as well as the R1200R Classic arrive. The new six cylinder K1600GT and GTL should be available, and in the showroom, by late April. These are much anticipated new bikes and we already have ten preorders for these models.
So you can see that we have good reason to be optimistic. The winter blues are about behind us and the encouraging signs of spring are nearly upon us thankfully, as we readily look forward to a very, very busy riding season.
